NON:op NON:op Arts and Humanities is a Chicago non-profit that creates experimental art experiences by and for all Chicagoans.

NON:op engages diverse Chicago communities with participatory projects where people use the arts to create a more just society. NON:op Open Opera Works engages diverse audiences, artists, and program partners around urgent social issues of our time through projects, events, and performances that are immersive, interactive, and participatory. Our large-scale works are supported by salons, panel discussions, workshops, and installations. We seek to release that which is both archetypal and unique in each spectator, to encourage meaningful conversation, and to bring forward new ideas and innovative ways of being.

Nearly 4,000 unique titles were affected by school book bans in recent years, with works by and about historically marginalized communities among those most frequently targeted.

INVENTORY OF LOST BOOKS is a four-part collaborative public humanities project exploring censorship, cultural memory, and the preservation of stories through immersive installation, sound, video, performance, and public participation.

Chapter Two and Chapter Three place visitors inside an evolving environment where books become evidence, witnesses, symbols, and absences—revealing the systems that determine which stories are preserved, questioned, or removed from public life.

Experienced in intimate, timed 30-minute entries, the installations invite audiences to reflect on a simple but urgent question: What is lost when books are silenced?
