In times of distress and injustice, we can both build the future we want to see while resisting those things that seek to harm our communities. Just like those who have come before us, we don’t do this work alone.

As we build and resist, we fix our eyes on God who sustains us in our work. Together, we partner with those in our communities who are seeking shalom and justice.

In this devotional, we will examine some biblical stories of builders and resisters for inspiration and encouragement as we partner with God and our neighbors in our own communities. May God’s Word inspire God’s people to see our communities flourish.

CCDA's Leadership Cohort 9 kicked off in Richmond last week! 🎉

Our first C9 retreat laid the foundation for two years of leadership formation rooted in Christ and community. C9 members built relationships, explored the heart of Christian Community Development, and learned about practices that sustain long-term leadership and community flourishing.

Along the way, the cohort learned from Susann Brown from Chickahominy Tribe, City of Richmond's Denzel Mitchell, Dr. Courtnye Lloyd, and Rev. Dr. Fred Liggin. Dominique Gilliard (C2), Sandra Van Opstal (C4), Charles Cheek (C6), and Eric Potter (C7) shared their wisdom with us.

They experienced CCD in action through visits to Ivy Baptist Church, Pineapple Inn with 3e Restoration Inc: A Christian Community Development Agency and Williamsburg Christian Church, and KUF Marketplace with Hampton Roads CCD Local Network. Big thanks to Richmond Hill for hosting us.

Dear God of liberation, justice, communal power, and possibility,

In this time of trouble, may we lead, live, and liberate like our foremothers. May we embody the documented courage of Sojourner, Jarena Lee, Julia Foote, Prathia Hall, and many others. May we fight for more than our own liberation but embody the womanist communal values of Harriett, Ella, Ida, and Fannie, who pursued justice for many.

May we allow ourselves to dream like my Grandma Johanna, born in enslavement but who changed the game for generations to come, and the many unknown women like her who built what they had not known.

to our site visit in Richmond, VA, back in February.

We have incredible CCDA members who have been cultivating CCD on the ground for decades. Many of them carry the witness of Dr. John M. Perkins from the moments they sat with him years ago; moments that deeply shaped them and led to ministries and church-based CCD that has endured over time.

We can’t wait to come alongside them and learn from our local members at the CCDA Conference this year.

"I was introduced to Dr. Perkins’s work in the summer of 1989. His book, With Justice for All, was required reading for the second-ever Summer in the City, Here’s Life Summer Project, convened by Campus Crusade for Christ (now Cru). Years later, I would learn that the language of the “summer project,” itself, was introduced to white evangelicalism by John M. Perkins. Now synonymous with white evangelical summer missions trips, the term’s linguistic roots hail from the Civil Rights Movement.

I met Dr. Perkins in 1991 and built a mentoring relationship with him over the next several decades. His Three Rs continue to offer bedrock wisdom in the work of racial healing. Dr. Perkins promoted each of my books through his CCDA network.

What’s more, in 2011, Dr. Perkins sat down for breakfast with my parents and me during a family visit to Jackson, MS. In fact, in the middle of our IHOP breakfast, my stepfather shared about his family roots in a small town near Mendenhall. Dr. Perkins and my stepdad discovered that they share a common family name. Dr. Perkins jumped on his cell phone and called a man whom he had mentored since childhood. The man bore the same last name as my stepdad and looked more like my stepfather than his own brother. We all marveled at how small the world is. My stepdad still beams with gratitude for the time we spent with Dr. Perkins. My mother snapped this cherished photograph on that trip." .page

Jesus,

We, your beloved body, intercede for the global body.

We thank you for the gift it is to represent you
on earth through our life, words, thoughts and
actions. We thank you for empowering us to
display the fruits of the living spirit of God and
to create good works that serve the world.

We ask that you continue to cover your churches
within the United States and all across the world.
We pray that every church leadership team be edified
and encouraged by you.

That every congregant that belongs to a church be
seen and kept by you.

That every member of the body that is searching for a
healthy church be carried and graced by you.

That every person that belongs to your body
sees their beautiful presence within the
church as purposeful and powerful.

Forgive us for the ways we have misrepresented
or misunderstood you and lead us into your
everlasting way. Help us display your kingdom
here on earth so your will of justice, love, mercy,
peace and joy for all would be evident in all
countries, through all languages, and through
every living soul on this blessed earth.

Keep our gaze on you as we walk obediently in rejoicing
with those who rejoice, suffering with those who suffer and
sharing the good news that is liberating for all. Give us eyes
to see how we can be generous beyond what is asked and
extend justice where injustice has reigned. May this be the
work of the hands of every church that proclaims your name.

We submit to you and you alone.
