ELCA World Hunger

ELCA World Hunger ELCA World Hunger is a ministry of the ELCA committed to pursuing a just world where all are fed. There is more work to do here at home and around the world.

As a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, we believe hunger is ultimately the result of broken relationships with God, with each other, and with the planet. Through ELCA World Hunger, we live out our baptismal call, restoring and reconciling communities at home and abroad. We know hunger is a challenge we can overcome, and with generous, loving hands we work for a world in which all are fed. Working through Lutheran churches around the world, our congregations in the United States and other partners, ELCA World Hunger is uniquely positioned to reach communities in need. We start by listening to our neighbors and learning how we can partner with them as they work to break the cycle of hunger and poverty. ELCA World Hunger, working with our partners, has already made a huge collective impact on hunger worldwide. But the rate of global progress against hunger is slowing in many of the world's poorest communities. And here in the United States, one in six Americans aren't always sure where their next meal is coming from. Many are forced to choose between paying for food and other basic necessities. And God invites us to participate and lead in this effort. When you support ELCA World Hunger through your gifts of time, talent and finances you join an unparalleled worldwide network of people working for change. Working through Lutheran companion churches and trusted partners, our gifts reach more places, more effectively, than we ever could alone. Our COMMITMENT to fighting hunger goes beyond providing funds to help those in need. We are a publicly engaged church, working for lasting, systemic change. Our commitment to teaching, organizing and mobilizing plays a critical role in supporting and amplifying our hunger work at the grassroots level. HUNGER EDUCATION PROGRAMS help ELCA members better understand the root causes and far-reaching impact of hunger, participate as informed citizens in the public conversation and achieve more sustainable lifestyles. Our ADVOCACY initiatives work with and on behalf of those with little economic or political power, rallying support for just, sound and compassionate social policies in forums ranging from city councils to the United Nations. How your gifts are used: Over 88 cents of each dollar you give to ELCA World Hunger directly supports programmatic work; just 11% is used for hunger program administration and fundraising.

The hunger leaders in our network are important educators in their communities. Check out Living Lutheran's story on how the New England Synod hunger team invited other neighboring leaders to learn about overlapping root causes of hunger alongside our partner, Greater Portland Family Promise.

Through relationships and partnerships, ELCA World Hunger digs deep to get at the root causes of hunger and poverty.

๐Ÿ“– "Equipped Not Exhausted" โ€” Bishop Hagmaier's 2026 Synod Assembly Sermon

Bishop Constanze Hagmaier wrote this sermon for the opening worship of the 2026 Synod Assembly, reflecting on the Assembly's theme scripture, Exodus 18:13โ€“27. ๐Ÿ™

Take a few minutes to read or listen to "Equipped Not Exhausted" and reflect on what it means to lead โ€” and serve โ€” without burning out.

Over the past year, these six leaders have walked alongside their communities as they developed an intersectional justice project. The ELCAโ€™s Building Resilient Leadership program (BRL), just wrapped up its first pilot cohort.

Over the course of 12 months, BRL participants further develop leadership skills through the creation of a justice project embedded in their communities, community organizing training, and peer mentoring.

This virtual event celebrates their accomplishments! Each of our six participants will tell the story of their learnings and their challenges. We hope you can join us.
