Family Matters, located in Chicago’s North-of-Howard neighborhood, offers children and families unique personal development experiences that inspire individuals to find their place in the world and be a positive force for change. Utilizing our Principles of Leadership model, we partner with families to design experiential learning programs tailored to their specific needs and interests. Programs r

ange in scope from tutoring and after-school activities for children and teens, to broader initiatives such as fitness, health, postsecondary readiness, and environmental stewardship. Family Matters offers safe surroundings in which individuals can explore, discover, take risks and determine their futures.

The youth from Family Matters School and Sacred Heart Schools came together to create Memorial Day gift bags for veterans. 🇺🇸

The bags were distributed at Hope Manor Apartments as a small gesture of gratitude and appreciation for those who have served our country. It was a meaningful opportunity for our young people to show kindness, compassion, and community spirit while honoring veterans this Memorial Day.

The Family Matters School youth took a trip to the Evanston Ecology Center and had an amazing hands-on learning experience! 🌱🐞

Yesterday, we officially opened the Family Matters 🪏🪴gardens for the growing season! We celebrated with a bell-ringing ceremony. Youth from Project RISE, Partners in Learning, and The Family Matters School and members of the Gardening Committee rang the FM Community Bell. Then we enjoyed dirt cake cups, garden veggie straws, and lemonade. Special thanks to the Lincolnwood Garden Club of Evanston and the Joan and Julian Berman Charitable Fund, whose grants will be used to support the front native perennial pollinator garden, the back Youth Vegetable Garden, and our new Indian spices hanging boxes.

Stronger Together: Rooted in Community 🌱
This year’s Gala theme celebrates the connections that allow our community to grow and thrive. We’re especially excited that the centerpieces are being designed by the youth from our Partners in Learning, Project RISE, and The Family Matters School programs — bringing creativity, collaboration, and care to every table.

Here, Partners in Learning pair Ann and Moza create wire stands for air plants using driftwood as a base, reflecting the strength and beauty of being rooted in community. 💚

The garden is off to a strong start! 💪🌱
Volunteers planted our cool-weather crew today—peas, radishes, lettuce, and cilantro. These guys will be harvested just in time to make room for summer stars like tomatoes.
