Virginia Cooperative Extension is a partnership of Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and local governments.

Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are volunteer educators who work within their communities to encourage & promote environmentally sound horticulture practices. Want more lightning bugs, butterflies, bumble bees and even box turtles in your yard next year? LEAVE THE LEAVES! Leaf litter provides habitat for tons of overwintering critters, keeping them warm and safe until springtime.

If you can't leave them where they fall, consider blowing them into a corner of your yard, or use them as great mulch for garden beds. The critters will thank you!

🌱 Learn ecologic methods to improve your landscape, and how to plan and apply them. Protect and enrich your soil and use water wisely. Consider low-maintenance lawn "mimics" that produce their own fertilizer. Grow natives and herbs to entice pollinators, and create interesting, useful and lovely beds, while you cut expenses, pollution and waste.
