It was jumpin' in the WTJU Jazz studio today. Rus had a number of guests to warm us up for the Charlottesville Jazz Fest, including John D'earth, Robert Jospé, and members of The Hard Modes. The Inaugural Charlottesville Jazz Festival runs June 4-7. Make sure to tune in to WTJU for appearances from Veronica Swift on Thursday, between 9-11am, and Ali Webb & Friends also on Thursday between 11am-12pm on Wild Women and Friends.

WTJU is proud to be a sponsor of the inaugural Charlottesville Jazz Festival, presented by the Charlottesville Jazz Society, THIS WEEK, June 4-7, 2026, and taking place at various venues on Charlottesville's downtown mall, celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer. Venues include The Paramount Theater of Charlottesville, Miller's Downtown, Vault Virginia, Rapture, The Whiskey Jar, Ting Pavilion, and The Front Porch.

Veronica Swift, in her homecoming performance, headlines the festival on Saturday at The Paramount. Look for many free performances including Ivan Orr and Friends, Vibe Riot, The US Navy Commodores, R4ND4ZZO, and others. Also performing are Charlie Ballantine, Robert Jospe, Stephanie Nakasian, Ali Webb & Friends, John D'earth and the C'ville All-stars.

On Monday, June 1, at 7:30pm, world renowned percussionist, composer, sound artist, and educator, JoVia Armstrong, will join David Buie-Moltz on WTJU Jazz program, Second Sight, to talk about her Global Jazz Fusion concert this Wednesday evening at Révéler Experiences in Richmond. Tune it in on 91.1FM, stream at wtju.net, or listen via the WTJU mobile app.

With a band of all-star players, Armstrong will invite the audience into the creative process through a unique, participatory format where everyone and anyone in the room can help shape the music performed. The band recieves creative input from the room, conjuring sounds and rhythms inspired by the people present.

Armstrong's genre-blending work fuses experimental music, Black musical traditions, and immersive technology, creating transformative sonic experiences that take audiences into Afrofuturistic worlds. As a bandleader, her project Eunoia Society explores immersive technology and therapeutic soundscapes, while her work with Detroit-based Musique Noire has garnered multiple Detroit Music Awards nominations.

JazzTimes Magazine is presenting, in two parts, a previously unpublished interview with the late Charles Mingus. Alto saxophonist and Mingus band member Charles McPherson was also present. In a music collection inherited from his friend Erik Mossel, Blues & Gospel Historian, Guido van Rijn, found a tape with an unpublished interview that Erik conducted with Charles Mingus before his concert in Loosdrecht, The Netherlands, on August 12, 1972. Guido transcribed the interview and it is now published for the first time.

Jeannette Fang joined the Garth Newel Piano Quartet in 2015 as pianist and Co-Artistic Director. Sharp Theater, Weill Recital Hall, and Steinway Hall, as well as appearing on stages in Europe and Asia.

Today Lucas hosted his final World Turning 😢 We've really appreciated the programming Lucas brought to WTJU on World Turning Fridays and also Issa Hours with DJ Simon Says (who is also leaving soon). Both DJs are moving out of state to further endeavors in their poetic fields. They will be missed!
