Dr. Lytton Musselman is a botanist, educator, and longtime steward of Virginia's Blackwater Ecological Preserve whose research, restoration work, prescribed-fire management, and public outreach have helped conserve and raise awareness of one of the northernmost remaining longleaf pine ecosystems in the United States.
Through the Longleaf Alliance’s network of conservation professionals, his knowledge and influence have helped shape restoration efforts across the longleaf’s range, from Virginia to Texas.

Virginia is for lovers, and there’s a wealth of nature to love across the state, from the Appalachian forests to the Eastern Shore. As TNC celebrates 75 years of protecting the lands and waters on which we all depend, we’re highlighting 75 species in Virginia that are sure to make you fall in love.
From the smallest critters and birds to black bears to people and communities, we all have a special place in nature.

Trails where you spot your favorite bird 🦉; streams and lakes where your kids catch their first fish 🎣; rivers where friends launch kayaks and bass boats 🛶. The Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) makes these moments possible. But without adequate funding, we risk losing that access. ⚠️

All their efforts support a 14 billion dollar outdoor recreation industry in Virginia. They do all of that while also keeping us safe, responding to nearly 20,000 annually calls to manage human-wildlife conflicts.

It’s time to put an end to decades of funding gaps and fully fund DWR.

The future of longleaf pine conservation is built on partnership. This week, TNC is headed to the 16th Biennial Longleaf Conference held by . We will join conservation leaders from Virginia to Texas working to strengthen collaboration across the longleaf pine range and to learn from each other. Together, we're restoring, connecting and protecting the forests that wildlife, communities and generations to come depend on.

Respecting the past as we build the future.

The Appalachian region has a long tradition of coal mining. For generations, communities and our country have relied on the industry, but as mining declines, the region is turning towards new solutions that diversify economies and the way we produce the energy we all need.

Today, across the Cumberland Forest in Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, some previously disturbed coal mining lands are being repurposed into solar energy sites. Solar projects on these lands have the potential to power homes and businesses while supporting conservation, economic opportunity and local communities.

This is what one innovative idea can spark. As we celebrate 75 years of conservation impact, we're looking back on bold ideas that changed the landscape and forward to the next generation of solutions.
