Join us for the Community Impact Film Series event focused on Housing Insecurity & Homelessness. This free community program brings together film, dialogue, and community resources to educate, engage, and empower attendees. The event will include a film screening, a panel discussion featuring community leaders and subject-matter experts, and a resource fair connecting participants with local organizations and service opportunities.

Film Synopsis: NO PLACE TO GROW OLD is the first documentary to explore the growing crisis of older adult homelessness in America. Set in Portland, Oregon, the film intimately follows three seniors – offering a rare and deeply human look at a demographic overlooked and underserved.

Sloan Screenwriting Fellow for her feature narrative script ‘Light Mass Energy,’ the story of Mileva Marić Einstein, who confronted rampant discrimination to become one of the first women in physics. 🎥Jon Cohrs is a filmmaker, producer and media artist whose work uses public engagement, collaboration and emerging technology to address contemporary issues on healthcare and chronic pain, technology and the environment. From 2020 to 2023 he served as senior producer for the R&D team at The New York Times exploring the future of journalism through research and emergent storytelling techniques, including photogrammetry, Unreal Engine, AI, spatial audio and other applications. 🎬Synopsis: Zak, a man with Down syndrome, runs away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a wrestler. Later, he meets with an outlaw who becomes his friend and coach.

🎤Davian “DJ” Robinson is a visually impaired dance artist, choreographer, educator, interdisciplinary collaborator, and licensed massage therapist based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

🎤Harshada Rajani is a writer, journalist, disability advocate, and the co-founder of We Win, a volunteer-based nonprofit dedicated to helping people recovering from neurological injuries afford rehabilitation.

🎤Vilissa Thompson is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) from Winnsboro, SC. Vilissa is the Founder & CEO of Ramp Your Voice!, an organization focused on promoting self-advocacy and strengthening empowerment among disabled people.

🎤Christian Ayers has been fighting for the rights of injured workers and the disabled since 2014.

🎤Kierra Sunris is a student, actress, public speaker, and disability advocate currently completing her degree in Communication Studies at UNC Charlotte, with minors in Film and Computer Science.

William D. Caballero is a Puerto Rican-American, q***r filmmaker. Born in the housing projects of Brooklyn, NY, and raised in a trailer in his grandparent’s backyard in Fayetteville, NC, his autobiographical animated documentary shorts have debuted at the 2017 and 2022 Sundance Film Festivals. His work features an innovative blend of animation and live action, usually combined with audio interviews from underrepresented and marginalized peoples. He is a 2001 Gates Millennium Scholar, 2017 Sundance New Voices Lab Fellow, 2018 Guggenheim Fellow, 2021 Creative Capital Awardee, 2022 Sundance Documentary Humanities Fellow, and 2024 Webby Award winner for Best Art Direction.
