Falsely conflating the two creates an opening for abortion restrictions to affect contraceptive access!



IUDs are more than 99% effective. Hormonal IUDs can last for 3 to 8 years depending on the type, and non-hormonal (copper) IUDs can last up to 10 years.

IUDs change the uterine environment, but their primary contraceptive action occurs before fertilization. Evidence shows they work mainly by interfering with s***m and preventing s***m from fertilizing an egg. IUDs do not disrupt an established pregnancy and are not abortifacients.

Access to both contraception and abortion care is essential to reproductive autonomy, and reproductive autonomy is a human right. đź©·

On this day in 1825, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was born, a writer, abolitionist, suffragist, educator, and influential Black activist.

Harper lived more than a century before the term “reproductive justice” existed, but her work reflected ideas central to the framework. In her 1866 speech “We Are All Bound Up Together,” she challenged a women’s-rights movement that often overlooked Black women, insisting that race, gender, poverty, and political power were interconnected.

More than a century later, Black women built upon this tradition. In 1994, twelve Black women gathered in Chicago and coined the term “reproductive justice,” combining reproductive rights with human rights and social justice. Their framework asked us to consider not only whether people have legal rights, but whether they have the resources, safety, healthcare, and freedom to exercise them.

Reproductive justice didn’t suddenly appear in 1994. Its roots run through generations of Black women demanding a more complete vision of freedom. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper reminds us just how deep those roots go.

The same medications and procedures used for abortion care are also used to manage miscarriages and serious pregnancy complications. When laws threaten providers with criminal penalties while leaving exceptions vague, confusing, or dependent on how sick a patient has become, doctors may be forced to delay care while determining what they’re legally allowed to do.

In states where abortion bans and restrictive laws are in effect, there have already been many cases that have resulted in needless suffering and death because people cannot get the immediate care they need.

Abortion is healthcare. Restricting it has consequences far beyond the circumstances lawmakers claim they’re targeting.
