Art and Art History are now accepting applications for the MFA Studio Art Program for Fall 2027 admission. We are a small, rigorous studio program informed by research and theory. Students receive full funding with university teaching, have private professional studios, work with distinguished faculty mentors, and benefit from the courses and programs of a research university.

Join us next week for another Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture with Sheida Soleimani, November 5, 2026 at 5:30 pm in 100 Hamilton Hall.

Sheida Soleimani is an Iranian-American artist who lives in Providence. The daughter of political refugees who were persecuted by the Iranian government in the early 1980s, Soleimani makes work that melds sculpture, collage and photography and highlights her own critical perspective on historical and contemporary socio-political occurrences in Iran. She focuses on media trends and the dissemination of societal occurrences in the news, adapting images from popular press and social media leaks to exist within alternate scenarios.

How can we understand the relationship between art collecting and Western imperialism as more than simply a story of victim and aggressor, of the plundered and the plunderer? From the Gilded Age to World War II, elite collectors and museums in the United States transformed from owning a smattering of Chinese porcelains to possessing some of the world's largest and most sophisticated collections of Chinese art. Beyond aesthetic taste and economics, geopolitics were vital to this transformation.

Ian Shin, Associate Professor of American Culture at the University of Michigan, will explore this question in "Porcelains and Power: The Politics of Chinese Art in the Age of American Ascendancy," November 4, 2026, at 5:30 pm, in the Ackland Art Museum's Art& space. Next week at the John and June Allcott Gallery: Opening reception and artist conversation for taylor barnes, Weight of Light, October 29, 2026, at 5:00 pm.

Weight of Light is an exhibition of seven works by multidisciplinary artist taylor barnes, created during her year-long residency at West Orchid in Pine Lake, Georgia. Weight of Light considers the relationship between material, perception, and the ongoing process of becoming. Emerging from a period of experimentation and personal reflection, the works occupy an ambiguous space between painting and object. Neither fixed representations nor resolved compositions, the works function as thresholds—sites of transition where questions of origin, transformation, and self-possession remain open.

New Art History course for Spring 2027! ARTH 169 Pencils to Pixels: The History of Animation examines the history and development of animation as both an art form and an industry worldwide. It aims to establish a foundation for undergraduate students from different academic backgrounds who might be unfamiliar with animation studies. It satisfies FC-Aesthetic or FC-Global.

The Institute for the Arts and Humanities is excited to announce its 2026-27 Faculty Fellowship Program recipients. This spring, art and art history professor Maggie Cao joins the Fellows Table to work on her project “Arboreal America: The Temporalities of Natural and National History.

Dr. Cao’s research focuses on 18th- and 19th-century American art in a global context. Her research employs the history of globalization and art’s interaction with topics like technology, economics, and the natural sciences. Dr. Cao’s publications include Painting US Empire: Nineteenth-Century Art and Its Legacies (2025) and The End of Landscape in Nineteenth-Century America (2018).

Salvador Jiménez-Flores will be the next Hanes Visiting Artist Lecturer on October 8, 2026, 5:30 pm, in 100 Hamilton Hall.

Salvador Jiménez-Flores (b. 1985, Jalisco, México) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the politics of identity, double consciousness, colonization, migration, "the other," and futurism through socially conscious installation, public, and studio-based art. His practice spans community-based work, drawing, ceramics, prints, and mixed media sculpture.
