On this day in 1865, the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As we reflect on this important moment in history and recognize the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice, our offices will be closed Friday, June 19 in observance of the holiday.
