And, we think you will be too. In 21 years of rescue, we thought we had seen most everything. But yesterday, we found that our newest rescue, Diva (aka Asteria) had been shot with a BB gun. She had pellets deep into her skin, and several open, gaping wounds. She is emotionally shut down, but we are doing everything medically and emotionally we can to help this sweet mare. No animal deserves this. Her herd mate and travel companion, Maia, has also been diagnosed with pneumonia, and is struggling to breath, in addition to her severe hoof lameness. How can animals be treated so horribly? How can you stare at your horse, and know they have been shot by a BB gun, and drop them off at a killpen, after you have bred them and bred them? Sometimes the world doesn’t make sense. Today all we can do is love them through this incredible pain and hardship. Be their stewards, their loving guide to a better, happier life. These two are getting ready for the adventure of their lives!!! Last week we were contacted by our Sanctuary friends that 3 horses needed immediate saving from the kill pen. The great news is that because we had some recent adoptions we were able to open up several quarantine stalls for 3 giant sweethearts that will be arriving today: two possibly pregnant mares, and a sweet Belgian gelding. Thank you to an incredible angel donor who bailed and transported these sweet souls who were worked to the bone in their previous life. Now it’s time to help and heal! The day Booker arrived, our hearts broke at the neglected body that came off the trailer. Along with his extremely overgrown hooves was a body that needed several hundred pounds. He was unsure of what to make of his new surroundings and these humans who wanted to do better for him. After months of gentle care, the right feed, veterinary visits, and training, Booker has made a remarkable comeback. He is still a bit cautious when meeting new humans, but he LOVES his horse pals, and his favorite volunteers 🥰 His life has been exponentially difficult, and we were thrilled to partner with Equine Voices at their second location in South Carolina, to give Booker forever sanctuary. On their 17 acre property, Booker will have room to run, graze and enjoy being a HORSE! Not to fret, another Healing Hearts herd member (and now his honorary sister), Sophia, will be joining him there. We couldn’t ask for a better place! The lush green acres will be HEAVEN on earth for these two! We need to raise $5000 to get them on their way!
