Day 18 of

An evening prayer from excerpts of Psalm 104:

"Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD my God, you are very great!
You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
covering yourself with light as with a garment,
stretching out the heavens like a tent. ...
May the glory of the LORD endure forever;
may the LORD rejoice in his works,
who looks on the earth and it trembles,
who touches the mountains and they smoke!
I will sing to the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
May my meditation be pleasing to him,
for I rejoice in the LORD."

Psalm 104:1-2, 31-34 ESV

Day 17 of

When I (Stephanie) read this verse today, I thought of you and those of you I've seen join Walktober: "that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine" Romans 1:12 ESV.

It's good to be on the trail with friends!

How are you making room for rest this weekend?

After much of going to and fro the last several weeks, I chose to use today as a "no pressure" day. I experimented with taking Cattius on a walk... not pictured, sorry. And tonight I enjoyed melted bree and apples around a campfire with my brother and sister-in-law. Highly recommend.

Before I circle back to my deeper study of Jeremiah, I decided to get some New Testament reading in for the month and started Romans today. What are you reading?

God's peace be with you, my friends!

Day 15 of

When is the last time you quoted along the lines of "His mercies are new every morning"?

"The steadfast love [hesed] of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 'The LORD is my portion,' says my soul, 'therefore I will hope in him.' The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him." Lamentations 3:22-25 ESV.

I (Stephanie) love this passage, and I think it is true even when we're reading it out of context on our Hobby Lobby* decor. But wow, don't skip the lead up.

"I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath; he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light; surely against me he turns his hand again and again the whole day long. ... He has made my teeth grind on gravel, and made me cower in ashes; my soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is; so I say, 'My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the LORD.'" 3:1-3, 15-18.

Out of this place of deep pain and despair he says BUT, "But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope" (3:21). Finding hope in God's hesed and "new mercies" isn't even the conclusion of this journey from pitch darkness and pain to hope and light. This chapter continues. It's so good. Take the journey. Wrestle with God through it. And take hope.

"'I called on your name, O LORD, and from the depths of the pit; you heard my plea, "Do not close your ear to my cry for help!" You came near when I called on you; you said, "Do not fear!" You have taken up my cause, O LORD; you have redeemed my life.'" 3:55-57

🍂

*I don't actually know if it's on Hobby Lobby decor... but it's definitely a verse that's risen to the level of "Live. Laugh. Love."

You read your Bible this morning. You prayed before lunch. You'll be at small group on Thursday.

And God still feels far away.

If that's you, you're in good company. Plenty of faithful Christians do all the right things and quietly wonder why their hearts haven't caught up.

Dr. Marcus Warner has walked with a lot of believers who felt stuck, and he's noticed a pattern: most discipleship trains the head and skips the heart.

He wrote A Deeper Walk: A Proven Path for Developing a More Vibrant Faith to help you have a more intimate relationship with God. To know God is to experience Him. When you are bonded to Him in joy, Bible study and prayer start becoming a dynamic interactive relationship.

GET THE BOOK AND WATCH THE FREE COMPANION VIDEOS

Marcus walks through the book in 10 short sessions. Each one runs about 10 minutes. Watch on your own, or gather a few friends and go through it together. There's a free downloadable discussion guide for groups, too.

Day 13 of

Checking in as grateful for a day of good connections, including a beautiful walk at Radnor Lake State Park with a close friend.

Happy to have started my Lamentations reading today ...which is an ironic feeling, given its literal name.

It feels apt to the unfolding first chapter that the two words I (Stephanie) scribbled in my margins to follow-up on in Hebrew ended up saying "Lonely Princess." See 1:1 ESV, "How lonely sits the city that was full of people! How like a widow has she become, she who was great among nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave."

Within the first chapter we see over and over the repetition of "none to comfort" this city that has fallen but that "The LORD is in the right, for I have rebelled against his word; but hear, all you peoples, and see my suffering; my young women and my young men have gone into captivity" (1:18 ESV).

This is going to be a hard read, as it should be. I'm looking forward to what God has to show me about lament.

Katie served as a missionary in New Delhi, India for three years. She's also a wife and mother managing a chronic illness. In this short video, she shares how the Deeper Walk School of Ministry brought clarity and healing to her spirit, soul, and body.

She learned practical ways to process hard emotions and return to joy. Through personal prayer appointments, she received freedom directly from the Lord and trained to pray for others. The program's mentorship and hands-on classes gave her a steady anchor of hope through life's hard seasons.

Day 12 of

In Jeremiah 51:56c, "for the LORD is a God of recompense; he will surely repay," that word "repay" is the root word שָׁלַם meaning to be at peace, to conclude, to restore (to name a few), and it's related to שָׁלוֹם, which you might recognize as the word "shalom." One of the things that has stood out to me throughout this reading is how God's Kingship is about making things right, repaying evil and repaying faithfulness.

I finished a readthrough of Jeremiah today, and I'm in a mood where I want to turn back to the beginning and do it again. I probably will soon, so I can delve into a deeper layer of study while the overview is still fresh. But, I'm going to forge ahead into Lamentations tomorrow.

Today's walk featured more fabulous trees, this time paired with sunshine and blue skies. What has been a highlight of your walking this week?

Day 11 of

An encouraging passage from today's devotions:

"This is what the LORD of armies says: 'The sons of Israel are oppressed, and the sons of Judah as well;
and all who took them captive have held them firmly, they have refused to let them go. Their Redeemer is strong, the LORD of armies is His name; He will vigorously plead their case
so that He may bring rest to their land, but turmoil to the inhabitants of Babylon.'" Jeremiah 50:33-34 NASB20

I hope your Sunday has been restful, friends. I'm still on a trip and blessed to connect with many wonderful ministry friends today as well several encounters with cute animals on my walk. Not pictured, my friend's small white dog who thought she could take on the entire family of deer.

Day 10 of

As I get toward the end of this reading of Jeremiah, I'm dwelling on the Kingship of God. The rise and fall of nations are in His hands. He doles out justice, mercy, and hope together. Even as His eye is on the sweeping moves of kingdoms and armies, no remnant is lost to Him, no person falls through the cracks. He has a word for each person and each kingdom, from the least to the greatest.
