Stronger Brotherhoods start with healthier Brothers.

No matter where life takes us after college, looking out for our Brothers never stops. Supporting physical and mental health is one way we can continue to show up for the people who have always been part of our Brotherhood.

Preventing hazing takes more than knowing what not to do. It takes a Chapter culture Brothers look out for one another, traditions have purpose and everyone has a role in creating a healthy Associate Member experience.

A Legacy of Prevention

In February 1970, former Executive Director George Spasyk (Michigan, ’49) challenged the traditional pledge system and asked whether fraternities could create a new-member experience built on dignity, equality and meaningful education rather than separation and subservience.

Lambda Chi Alpha answered that challenge at the 33rd General Assembly in 1972 by adopting Associate Membership and Fraternity Education. The Fraternity replaced the term “pledge” with “Associate Member” and gave Associate Members the ability to vote on Chapter matters and run for office.
This was more than a change in terminology. It established a fundamentally different approach to the new-member experience: one grounded in participation, personal development and respect from the moment a man joins.

Brotherhood unique. But being a tradition doesn’t automatically make something worth passing on.
