Inspired by his mother, a gifted painter, Ralph Buschbacher grew up surrounded by beautiful art and immersed in an artist’s perspective. His turned-wood bowls, vases, platters and other functional or decorative pieces feature intricate, richly colored surface designs that captivate and fascinate.

The Carmel artist has long been a woodworker, crafting fine furniture throughout his life until his son convinced him to buy a lathe. While he was a practicing physician, Ralph delved into the fundamentals of woodturning at the world-renowned Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Franklin, Indiana. He considers his teaching position there today one of the pinnacles of his art career.

He interprets traditional techniques and materials – wood burning, inks and stains, paints, texturing with chisels and grinders, resin inlay and gold leaf – in unique ways, orchestrating an unusual symphony. He pushes the boundaries of convention, constantly seeking new ideas in woodturning.

"Born in Minneapolis and raised in Indiana, I did not start out as an artist, but spent many years as a social worker after graduating from Indiana University. However, my love for art and the beauty of God's creation has been with me since I was a child. So when my three beautiful children were all in school, I began to pursue this dream of being an artist. I haven't looked back since.

For me, painting is both a joyful and deeply spiritual process. I believe that there is beauty all around us, and through the exploration of color and light, I hope to capture at least a bit of that beauty. Whether it is a landscape, still life, angel or bustling street scene, I hope you find a little bit of joy in my work."

“Over the past 8 decades I have lived in three countries - England, Canada and America - Northern California, Oregon, Wisconsin, Arizona, Nevada and Indiana. My artwork is presented to evoke memories, feelings and connections present throughout your life.

Each piece depending on how it is hung will give a four way perspective - all ways are correct! I have found different age groups will have a different experience.

My art can be seen in several stores and offices in Indianapolis, at Noblesville Creates and Fishers City Centre Art exhibits. 14 pieces are shown currently in a Boston innovation center.”

We hope to see you in two weeks at the Ritz Charles for our 5th annual Spotlight on Art!

21 local award-winning artists will be present selling their artwork, with 50% of event proceeds benefiting the children of the Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville, The Children's TherAplay Foundation, and Prevail, Inc. Pieces of locally-made children's artwork will also be available for purchase.

Highlighting local artist and Spotlight on Art participant, Clive Jachnik.

A British artist, Clive grew up near Liverpool and later attended university in Scotland and England. As a painter, Clive trained in Glasgow and is a follower of the `Scottish Colourist` tradition of painters first established in the early 20th century there. The close influence and mentoring of renowned Scottish artists such as Alberto Morrocco, John Cunningham and James Orr can be seen in Clive’s bold use of colour, free brush strokes and strong geometric compositions.

Over the past thirty years, Clive’s work has focused upon the traditional subject matter of still life, landscape and plein air painting drawn from his extensive travels throughout some of the less-visited corners of the world. His treatment of regular subject matter such as maritime scenes, outdoor markets and intimate domestic gatherings yield a feeling of relaxed intimacy that is delivered through simple, balanced drawing and joyous colour.

Nica Post (she/they) is a Hamilton County Ceramic artist who specializes in whimsical, functional forms. Mugs, bowls, and vases are Nica's favorite items to create, but a smattering of forms usually make their way into any market. Each item is slightly different, allowing anyone who buys Nica's work to experience the joy of owning something uniquely theirs.

As the owner of Looking Glass Pottery Studio in Noblesville, Nica's mission has been to bring arts education, community, and fun to Hamilton County, offering one-time and multi-week pottery class sessions. The studio is supported by a wonderful group of techs and instructors, as well as a vibrant member and student community.

“I came to ceramics as a second career and developed my craft over several years of art center classes, numerous workshops and a lot of trial and error. My interest in ceramics stems from my hobby of collecting vintage pottery.

Clay is my medium of choice as I love that it is organic and that the clay and I work together to form useful and decorative pieces that carry a bit of me in them.

I am inspired by the visual artists Steven Hill and Lucie Rie, favoring the simple design and beautiful finishes speak to me.

My love of travel gives me so many areas of expression. My recollection of favorite experiences and places provide countless ideas for my pottery.”
