Becky's Gift 501c3 non-profit Foundation that offers short term assistance to Horses in need.. About Becky: Becky was born April 1, 1982 and grew up in Bow, NH.

She graduated from Bow High School in 2000, and then attended the University of New Hampshire graduating with Honors and a degree in Anthropology in 2004. At age eleven, Becky started showing horses under the tutelage of Deedee Ludlam of Bear Brook Stables in Allenstown. She owned a special Morgan mare named Gradell's Delight. Becky and Daisy showed all over New England, most frequently at Deerfie

ld Fairgrounds. They competed in Junior Exhibitor Hack and Morgan Pleasure Junior to Ride classes and were named champion many times. At UNH, Becky found her second love, archeology, and attended dig sites in Belize, Bolivia, and Guatemala. She was awarded a full scholarship to complete her Doctorate at the University of California at Riverside, a leading school in archeology. Both Becky and Daisy passed away in 2005, just a few months apart. Daisy in April, Becky in September, the bond between them ever strong..

(This post is for current and future clients...).

“I feel bad using funds that could help other horses”. We hear this often. It makes it that much harder to ask for help. It minimizes one’s own needs, as if somehow YOUR needs are less important than those of others.

You are experiencing some form of upheaval in your life. With a heap of stress piled on. Whether the need is 10 bales of hay, or urgent veterinary care, there’s something happening that stands in the way. That’s created this hard situation. And that’s why we’re here.

You’re not asking for help for yourself. You’re asking for your horse, i.e., advocating. It’s the fortunate horse that has an owner caring enough to set aside their own feelings and do that. It’s when the ask doesn’t happen that bad outcomes can arise.

We’ll say it again. It’s not for you. It’s for your horse. You are JUST AS WORTHY as anyone else. Please cut and paste that last sentence.

Her dream job. High school til now, she’s been there many years. Her dream horse. Over a decade with this quirky, forward little guy. Her request for help was hard… assistance with euthanasia.

The job unexpectedly ends in a month. It’s not just a paycheck, it’s a support system. It’s a job AI can do, so finding another may be a challenge. And when the income stops, she must choose between paying rent, or feeding her horse.

The horse is older, healthy- but difficult. She loves him deeply; fears he could fall into the wrong hands if she sells him. Her plans are for euthanasia when the job ends.

Enormous losses. All at once. An effort to create order in a world that’s spinning.

We offered an option she hadn’t thought possible. Help feeding her horse if she becomes unable. This, to allow her a little space. Space to not have to process losing both job and horse at the same time. Space to secure employment and then see where things are at.

If, at the end of a few months (or before; it’s up to her), the decision is still to euthanize her horse, we’ll help with that. But hard decisions are better made from a place of stability, rather than crisis.

As we consider the cost of freedom, we are grateful to the many noble animals who served alongside soldiers with courage and loyalty. We pay particular tribute to the scrappy, 13 hand mare who defied all odds, Sgt. Reckless. If you're not familiar with her story, you can read it here by clicking on the first link (Sgt Reckless). A safe Memorial Day to you all!

We recently assisted a client with hay. And that got us thinking. About the high cost of gas and diesel. About the impact it will have on 2026 hay prices (especially diesel).

It’s scary. Because as a result, many may be forced to feed less.

If you, or others you know, find yourself in this situation, please be aware there are options. Becky’s Gift will help. So will organizations we’ve listed below (If you know of others, please mention in comments!).

And if you can, even small donations to these organizations will help ensure horses are fed.

(**Warning: graphic pic). Our 4/19 post was about a young mare with fibroblastic sarcoid. Update: her surgery is complete. Biopsy did come back as cancerous. Fortunately, it’s treatable in early stages like this. Our client chose cryotherapy over chemotherapy as it was a safer option for the joint.

Per the vet, “I attached a picture of the mass, because I wanted BECKY’S GIFT to see how your generosity will have a HUGE positive impact on this horse's quality of life. She's going to feel so much better without this monstrosity hanging off her leg, and we couldn't have done it without your help! Thank you very much for all that you guys do. We're so lucky to have a program like this here in NH, and you are truly appreciated.”

Thank you Dr. Robertson. And kudos to our client for being so mindful of the mare’s comfort. We suspect her girl is grateful!

Fibroblastic sarcoid. This young mare taught us a lot.

It started 6 months ago as a small spot on her knee. Then quickly grew into a baseball sized mass.

Per our client, it seems sarcoids on horses are typically caused by bovine papillomavirus, transmitted from cows via flies or direct contact with the virus (rubbing on a contaminated surface).

Biopsy is important- and addressing this mare’s mass requires surgery. Becky’s Gift will provide assistance for both. Despite staying sound, it’s clearly uncomfortable for her to navigate with the weight and bulk of the growth. Stay tuned- we’ll update you next week re: the outcome!
