The theme for Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™), October 4–10, 2026, is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

This year’s FPW theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on the simple steps people can take to recharge safely. Safe charging means making smart choices every time you plug in.

Many devices used in our daily lives - phones, tablets, laptops, tools, toys, e-bikes, and scooters—run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which store a lot of energy in a small space. If they are damaged or charged the wrong way, they can overheat, start a fire, or even explode.

• Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.
• Charge devices on a table, desk, or other hard, flat surface. Do not charge them on beds, couches, or under pillows. Devices and chargers produce heat during normal charging. Soft surfaces can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause the battery to overheat.
• Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, is smoking, or has a strange smell. These are warning signs that the battery may be damaged or failing.
• Unplug your device when it is fully charged. Do not leave it plugged in longer than needed. Leaving a device plugged in too long can increase heat and stress on the battery.
• Charge larger items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside and away from exits. These batteries are larger and store more energy. If they fail, fires can grow quickly and spread.
• When on a plane, keep your device where you can see it while charging. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments. Do not charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it is important for the flight crew to respond quickly.

A Number Worth Noting

🔄 26 Times During September, Two or More Emergencies Were Happening at the Same Time

When most people see a fire truck or ambulance responding, they often don't realize another crew may already be committed to a different emergency elsewhere in the township.

These overlapping incidents are why staffing, training, and apparatus matter. Emergencies do not occur one at a time, and our goal is always to have enough resources available to answer the next call for help.

As we often say, the garbage truck driver should never be surprised when they turn the corner and find garbage. Likewise, we do not want to be surprised when we turn the corner and find a fire, serious crash, or life-threatening medical emergency.

🚒 Why Do We Need a Platform Truck? 🚒

Sometimes people ask why Gaines Charter Township Fire Department needs a platform truck. The answer is simple: our goal is to respond to emergencies with the right equipment and the right number of personnel to safely and effectively protect our community.

There's an old saying: "The garbage man should never be surprised when he turns the corner and finds garbage." The same applies to the fire service. We never know what we'll find when we arrive at an emergency, but we want to be prepared when we turn the corner and there is a fire. Having the right resources already responding helps us protect lives, property, and our firefighters.

Platform 65 is housed at Station 2, which is staffed 24/7 by two firefighter/EMTs. Depending on the nature of the incident, those personnel respond on either Engine 67 or Platform 65, ensuring the appropriate apparatus is sent to match the emergency.

Platform 65 responds on all multifamily residential structure fires, commercial structure fires, and fire alarms in commercial and multifamily occupancies within Gaines Township. While many people think of it as "just a ladder truck," it provides critical capabilities that help firefighters do their jobs safely and efficiently.

✅ Rescue Access
When residents are trapped on upper floors or roofs, Platform 65 allows firefighters to quickly reach them and bring them to safety.

✅ Fire Attack From Above
The aerial device can deliver large amounts of water from elevated positions, helping firefighters control fires in places that engines alone cannot reach.

✅ Enhanced Firefighter Safety
The enclosed platform provides a secure work area for firefighters operating at height and allows multiple personnel and equipment to be positioned where they are needed most.

✅ Protection for Larger Buildings
Apartment complexes, schools, churches, nursing homes, warehouses, and commercial buildings throughout our township often require specialized aerial access for firefighting and rescue operations.

✅ Mutual Aid Response
Platform 65 not only serves Gaines Township, but also responds to assist neighboring communities when additional aerial resources are needed.

By housing both Engine 67 and Platform 65 at Station 2, we can quickly deploy the apparatus that best fits the emergency. This supports our commitment to sending the right equipment and the right number of people to every call.

We hope the day never comes when these capabilities are needed, but being prepared is what emergency services are all about. Platform 65 helps ensure that when a resident, business, or visitor calls 911, firefighters arrive with the resources necessary to handle the incident safely and effectively.

Gaines Charter Township Fire Department Equipped for Cardiac Emergencies

When seconds matter, having the right tools can make all the difference.

All frontline Gaines Charter Township Fire Department apparatus are equipped with LUCAS Chest Compression Systems and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to provide high-quality, uninterrupted care to patients experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. These advanced devices help our firefighters and EMS personnel deliver consistent chest compressions and rapid defibrillation.

Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Survival depends on immediate recognition, early CPR, rapid defibrillation, and advanced medical care. We are proud to serve in Kent County, which has one of the highest out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rates in Michigan, thanks to the combined efforts of bystanders, dispatchers, first responders, EMS providers, hospitals, and community CPR education programs.

Our commitment is simple: provide the highest level of care possible when our residents need us most.

✅ Start CPR if you are able
✅ Use an AED if one is available
✅ Follow dispatcher instructions until help arrives

Our Paid-on-Call Firefighter Dan Kamp and members of his family travelled with two of his antique fire trucks to the annual SPAAMFAA Convention in Marlboro, Massachusetts the weekend of August 27-31. The convention hosted more than 80 various emergency apparatus. He was awarded the Best Ladder Company as well as the Furthest Distance Travelled. Congratulations Dan.

🚫 Seasonal Burning Restrictions Begin Today

From September 1 through November 30, open burning of yard waste is prohibited in designated Restricted Burning Areas within Gaines Township.

✅ Recreational fires, campfires, grills, and approved fire pits remain permitted.

Please refer to the attached maps to determine if your property is located within a restricted area.

August department training focused on the hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries. During the lecture, firefighters learned about the different types of lithium-ion batteries (LIB), their basic internal components, and where these batteries can be found throughout the township.
The hands-on portion of the training gave firefighters the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice while wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE). Firefighters worked with several types of lithium-ion batteries, learning how to safely disassemble and identify their internal components. They also observed batteries that had entered thermal runaway, gaining a better understanding of the hazards, heat, and rapid escalation associated with these events.
The training concluded with firefighters practicing the proper procedures for placing damaged or compromised batteries into appropriate containment for disposal. This practical experience helps our personnel better recognize lithium-ion battery hazards, understand how these incidents can develop, and safely manage them when they occur in our community.
Hands-on training like this keeps our firefighters prepared for the evolving hazards they may encounter on emergency calls and strengthens our ability to protect our residents, businesses, and community.
