August department training focused on the hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries. During the lecture, firefighters learned about the different types of lithium-ion batteries (LIB), their basic internal components, and where these batteries can be found throughout the township.
The hands-on portion of the training gave firefighters the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice while wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE). Firefighters worked with several types of lithium-ion batteries, learning how to safely disassemble and identify their internal components. They also observed batteries that had entered thermal runaway, gaining a better understanding of the hazards, heat, and rapid escalation associated with these events.
The training concluded with firefighters practicing the proper procedures for placing damaged or compromised batteries into appropriate containment for disposal. This practical experience helps our personnel better recognize lithium-ion battery hazards, understand how these incidents can develop, and safely manage them when they occur in our community.
Hands-on training like this keeps our firefighters prepared for the evolving hazards they may encounter on emergency calls and strengthens our ability to protect our residents, businesses, and community.

Today marks a significant milestone for the Gaines Charter Township Fire Department.

For the first time since transitioning to a full-time fire department, Station 1 will now be staffed with three full-time personnel per shift. Since our move to full-time operations, our minimum staffing has been just two firefighters on duty. While our crews have consistently risen to the challenge, operating with only two personnel has often made emergency incidents more difficult and delayed critical tasks that are essential to protecting lives and property.

Recognizing these challenges, the Gaines Township Board and Township leadership listened to the needs of the department and made the commitment to invest in additional staffing. This enhancement will strengthen our ability to respond more effectively, improve firefighter safety, and provide an even higher level of fire and EMS service to the residents and visitors of Gaines Township.

This investment demonstrates the Township’s continued commitment to public safety and its dedication to providing exceptional emergency services for our community. We are grateful for the support of our Township leaders and appreciate their vision in helping us continue to grow and better serve our residents.

Today is more than just adding another firefighter to a shift, it is another step forward in our commitment to protecting the community we are proud to serve. We look forward to building on this progress and continuing to provide the highest level of service for years to come.

The Gaines Township Fire Department family is grieving alongside one of our fellow firefighters following the tragic and unexpected loss of his father in a motor vehicle accident.

During this incredibly difficult time, we ask that you keep the Young family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate the days ahead. The emotional burden of such a sudden loss is immeasurable, and we hope to come together as a community to help ease some of the financial burdens that often accompany an unexpected tragedy.

For those wishing to support the Young family, donations can be dropped off at either Gaines Township Fire Station. Cash donations, gift cards, and other forms of support are welcomed and will go directly toward helping the family with immediate and upcoming expenses.

For those who are unable to drop off a donation, a GoFundMe has also been established as an additional way to contribute.

Any contribution, no matter the amount, is greatly appreciated and will help provide support during this challenging time.

Most importantly, we ask for your prayers, love, and support for the Young family as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.

Thank you for helping us support one of our own.

Memorial Day 2026
Today is a day to remember those who have served this great country and given their life in order to preserve our current way of life.
Words from President Trump 2026 Memorial Day Proclamation,
"All Americans inherit the glorious gift of liberty that has been purchased with the spilled blood of brave warriors and the tears and heartache of those they left behind. It is fitting and necessary for our Nation to pause for an annual reminder of the enduring and perilously high cost of freedom, but the immeasurable gravity of what has been sacrificed for the greater good deserves our eternal reverence and unwavering gratitude every day."
"On this solemn day, the First Lady and I ask you to join us in prayer for lasting peace in this volatile world, for the protection of those in harm’s way, and for the grace of Almighty God to comfort all who grieve."
