A big day in history.

On June 16, 1946, Italians went to the polls in a national referendum to choose between a monarchy and a republic. The results, announced on June 18, showed that the republic had won, with 54.3% of the vote.
This marked the end of more than 85 years of the House of Savoy and paved the way for a new democratic Italy. Enrico De Nicola was later elected as the first President of the Italian Republic.
