✈️ We’re ready for takeoff, Staff Appreciation Week is here!

This week at Nickels, we’re celebrating the incredible teachers and staff who show up every single day for our kids with this year’s theme:
“Flying High Because of You”

From coffee bars to snack carts, lunches, treats, and special surprises, we’ve got a full week planned to remind our staff just how appreciated they are.

Because the truth is simple, our school runs on the care, energy, and dedication they bring every day.

Thank you to every parent, volunteer, and donor who helped make our 5th Grade Harvest Party a success. Your support gave our students an afternoon filled with games, snacks, music, and (screen-free!) time together after school.

With SNAP benefits being cut to Michiganders in just a week, we know many of our BCPS families are worried about having food on their table. In Michigan, this is impacting almost 1.5 million people, or 14.5% of the population; a whopping 23% of Michigan kids receive food assistance through SNAP, and 43% of SNAP households in Michigan have children.

That's right: nearly a quarter of Michigan's children will be far less food secure in less than a week.

We Are BC exists to support, first and foremost, our students and their families. Without food on the table, learning is impossible. And here in Byron Center, we take care of each other. So...

✅ WHAT TO DO:

🧡 If you need help, know you are not alone. The resources below are a starting point; we are also looking at ways to actively support immediate needs in the BCPS community as we head into winter.

🖤 For those who can help, donate money, food, or supplies to Buist Community Assistance Center or adopt another pantry on the list below. Buist serves Byron Center and has a donation shed open all day where you can drop donations of food and SO much more - cold weather gear, kids' shoes, diapers, other household goods. What they need most: https://www.buistcac.org/donations/

The time is NOW to know your neighbor and build your community. Start a donation drive in your neighborhood, reach out to people you know who might be impacted, or start a recurring monetary donation to organizations getting food on people's plates.
