There is a special kind of pain that comes with giving an animal their freedom ride from the shelter and never getting to see the intended life that was supposed to come next. When we pulled Odysseus from ACCT, we weren’t just taking him away from the shelter. We were taking him toward safety, toward comfort, toward the first chapter of a life where he would be loved simply because he existed. We imagined the soft bed, the full belly, the furever family, the toys, and the moments that would finally teach him that the world could be kind.
But sometimes, despite everything, they leave us before they get there. That hurts in a way that’s difficult to put into words. Not just because we lost them, but because we carry the grief of the tomorrows they never got to have. All the love that was waiting for them. All the happiness they deserved. Odysseus never got the ending we wanted for him. But for a brief moment, he knew that someone stopped, someone cared, and someone fought for him. I hope that mattered. I hope he knew he wasn’t alone.
Thank you to his foster mama, Megan, and to all of you who donated towards his care. Diagnostics showed that he likely had kidney cancer and his kidneys had shut down, something that his medical team thinks he’d been living on the streets with for so, so long.
Our bill was $3975.00 at Penn after a $1200 bill at . In his memory, please help us pay off the diagnostics we had performed in hopes that we could take him home. Thank you. We’re so sorry.
