James Harvey McCubbin, age 83, of Upper Deerfield Township died on Tuesday morning June 9, 2026 while his daughter was holding his hand.
Born on May 19, 1943 in Bridgeton, NJ, he was the son of the late L. Grant and Ida B. McCubbin. He was a resident of Upper Deerfield Township for the greater part of his life.
Following graduation from Bridgeton High School in 1961, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving from 1961until 1965 and was honorably discharged as a Second-Class Petty Officer (E5). He worked briefly for Ashley-McCormick Company in Bridgeton before beginning his long-term career with NJ Bell, Bell Atlantic and Verizon. There, he worked his way through various craft titles and was promoted to a field support management position in engineering, retiring in 2003. He returned in a consultant position for an additional five and a half years. Continuing his education, he earned his Associate’s Degree in marketing and graduated from Cumberland County College in 1988. Harvey continued his affiliation with the CCC serving as a member of the Alumni Association for many years and felt that the time and effort spent there was very rewarding.
Mr. McCubbin was an active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Bridgeton for many decades. There, he worshiped regularly and served his church in many capacities, including fund raising, Vestry and Jr. Warden. He was vigorously involved in the property maintenance and management of the church building. In later years, the church merged with Trinity Episcopal Church in Vineland and was sold. Currently operating as "Church of the Resurrection, Episcopal, " Harvey attended there and taught an adult Sunday school class.
He was active with the Bridgeton Lions Club for many years, serving in virtually every office including president in 1990-1991 and again in 2007-2008. In 1999, Harvey was the recipient of the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow Award, presented by Lions International. He was currently serving as sight chairperson and remained active in eye screening for local elementary schools.
He is survived by his wife, Jane C. McCubbin, one daughter, Kimberly A. McCubbin-Mersel and her husband Andrew of Florence and two granddaughters, Jamie Lynne Mersel and Lauren Alexandra Mersel.
Harvey is also survived by a sister, E. Claire Walton of Upper Deerfield
Township.
He was predeceased by his twin brother, F. Grant McCubbin and his wife Becky and his brother-in-law, Rev. Albert Walton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend memorial services at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Thursday morning June 25th at 11 o’clock.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday morning the 25th from 9 until 11 prior to the memorial service.
The burial with military honors will take place following the service at the Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery in Hopewell Township.
