Join us for "Nature Journaling & Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt," Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9:30AM to 12:30PM at the Restore & Regenerate Forest at Tilly Foster Farm. This hands-on Nature Journaling & Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt is part of a long-term effort to understand and document forest changes over time.

Bring your curiosity and your camera, sketchbook or phone. We’ll explore the forest in search of fall foliage, migrating birds, insects, fungi, trees, tracks and other signs of wildlife — recording what we find along the way.

Register on our website at cceputnamcounty.org/events.

This program is being done in partnership with Soldiers2Scientists.

Providing food and habitat encourages birds to forage and take shelter in your garden. Leave the seeds of late blooming perennials for our feathered friends to eat. Overwintering resident species and birds passing through on their migration will appreciate winter berries and habitat from evergreen and deciduous shrubs of varying heights.

Did you know that all the tiny air leaks in an unsealed home can add up to leaving a window open all winter long?

Before temperatures drop, taking a few afternoon DIY steps can make a big difference in how comfortable your home feels. But for long-term savings and real winter comfort, pairing simple DIY fixes with professional air sealing and insulation is key.

The best part? NYSERDA programs can cover up to 100% of professional air sealing and insulation costs for eligible households!

🦌Oh, Deer! Statistically, there are more deer-related car accidents during the months of October, November and December. The New York State DEC recommends motorists take the following precautions to reduce the chance of hitting a deer (or moose):
- Use added caution on roadways marked with deer crossing signs.
- When a deer is seen approaching the roadway ahead, honk your horn to help them avoid entering the roadway.
- Decrease speed when you see deer near roadsides. Deer can "bolt" or change direction at the last minute.
- If you see a deer cross the road, decrease speed. Deer often travel in groups, so expect other deer to follow.
-If encountering an animal on the roadway, brake firmly but do not swerve. Swerving can cause a collision with another vehicle, a tree, a pole or other objects.
- If an animal is hit, the DEC advises motorists to stay away from the animal.

From our friends at Cornell Lab of Ornithology: As winter approaches, you might start noticing more and more crows gathering in the evening. During the colder months, American Crows gather in large communal roosts that can number in the thousands!

These gatherings can include both local crows and birds that have traveled from farther north to spend the winter. As evening approaches, smaller groups gather in trees, on buildings and elsewhere before joining larger groups on their way to the roost. By morning, the crows disperse again to find food, with many local birds returning to their familiar territories. Some communal roosting sites are used year after year.

Have you ever seen one of these massive winter crow gatherings in person?
