Did you know that most homes lost in wildfires ignite from flying embers, not the main fire itself? 🔥 Embers can be carried more than a mile by the wind, igniting homes, vegetation, and other materials long before the fire front arrives.

FWRD is proud to partner with Mountain Valleys Resource Conservation & Development to offer FREE home wildfire risk assessments. Research shows that a home's condition plays a major role in whether it survives a wildfire.

Sign up today to have a trained home assessor visit your property and provide a personalized wildfire risk assessment, along with recommendations to help protect your home and reduce your wildfire risk.

Grateful for our partnership with the Renew NC team and their commitment to our neighbors. As we prepare for a busy season of rebuilds over the next three months, their team has been instrumental in helping us locate temporary rentals for families during the rebuilding process.

Recovery takes collaboration, persistence, and people who truly care. Thank you, Renew NC, for showing up for our communities and helping make these rebuilds possible. 💙

A huge thank you to Mix 96.5 for inviting us to share FWRD’s mission on the radio with Melanie Wilkinson. It’s so important that our neighbors know what recovery and preparedness resources are available and where to turn for help.

During Hurricane Helene, 96.5 was live all day to ensure communities across WNC had access to timely information, resources, and support when it mattered most. The community is so grateful for all you do!

FWRD's interview will air this Sunday at 6:00 AM! Not an early riser? No problem. A link to the interview on 96.5’s website will be shared on Monday.

If you are in FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Buyout Program but are facing foreclosure, contact Pisgah Legal Services for help as soon as possible!
This program buys damaged residential properties and may pay based on the pre-disaster value, allowing for:

✔ Mortgage payoff to the lender
✔ Potential equity funds to help your recovery
✔ Financial stability moving forward

If foreclosure happens before mitigation is completed, homeowners may lose the opportunity to receive these funds. However, lenders may delay foreclosure if provided with verification that the property has been approved for mitigation.

FWRD is grateful for the nearly 40 community members and partners who joined us for our May 6th Long-Term Recovery Group meeting to learn more about our achievements, goals, and preparedness efforts.

We were grateful to hear updates from our wonderful partners, including the Brevard/Transylvania Chamber of Commerce, The City of Brevard, North Carolina - Mayor Copelof and Wilson Hooper, SparkPoint, Housing Assistance WNC, Grow NC - Dee Dee Perkins, and our Transylvania County Emergency Management Director - Kevin Shook.

A special mention to Pisgah Bakehouse for providing the delicious sandwiches and to Grace Brevard for generously providing the venue.

Recovery and preparedness take all of us, and we’re grateful to be walking alongside such dedicated partners and neighbors.

We hope to see you at our next LTRG community meeting on August 6th from 12 - 1:30. Visit www.gofwrd.org to sign up for our newsletter!
