The response to our 2026 Community Health Grants cycle reflects both the tremendous work happening across our region—and the scale of the need.

Our Grants Committee is beginning the thoughtful work of reviewing 75 applications from organizations serving Transylvania, Haywood, and Madison counties. We’re deeply grateful to every organization that took the time to share its work, its vision, and the needs it is working to address.

We'll announce funding decisions by the end of October, with grants awarded in November. Stay tuned!

Partner Spotlight: Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County 🥕🥬

The Hunger Coalition’s meal kit program is doing more than providing food—it’s helping families build the skills and confidence to prepare healthy, affordable meals at home.

Each week, 96 families receive pre-portioned ingredients and simple recipes for nutritious meals that can be prepared in about 30 minutes. Kits are distributed through trusted community partners and the Coalition’s weekly food distribution, with tastings and education helping make healthy eating approachable, practical, and affordable.

Demand already exceeds capacity, with every partner site requesting more.

The Hunger Coalition's work strengthens food access today while building skills families can carry forward. 💚

Last night’s Food Summit was a powerful reminder that feeding kids well takes more than putting food on a plate—it takes creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to meeting families where they are. 💚

Transylvania County Schools’ Jeanette Broda shared how school nutrition has become a hub for innovation: sourcing more healthy foods locally and regionally, preparing meals kids actually want to eat, and building partnerships that keep food accessible far beyond the cafeteria. Community members got to taste that work firsthand as the school nutrition team prepared a meal with ingredients including beef from Brasstown Beef in Cherokee, North Carolina-grown rice, and Carolina produce. 🥕🥩

That same team, led by Broda, a certified nutritionist, provides free meals to every student during the school year and has built a year-round network of support—becoming the first district in North Carolina to continue home meal delivery after COVID, partnering with Transylvania County Schools Educational Foundation - TCSEF on Backpack Buddies, and launching Groceries to Go.

This summer alone, they expect to serve more than 66,000 meals.

The Summit was hosted by The Bread of Life of Transylvania County, Hunger Coalition of Transylvania County, Sharing House, and Transylvania County Schools School Nutrition Services, around a shared goal: making sure our neighbors—and especially our kids—have access to good, healthy food all year long.

This is what local collaboration can look like: local food, creative solutions, strong partnerships, and fewer gaps for families. We’re glad to support the Summit and the partners doing this work every day. 💚

We 💚 Transylvania Educators!

Yesterday marked the second of two Educator Retreats thoughtfully created by our board member Lauren Agrella-Sevilla and coach Rebecca Cook with Naming the Real. Held at The Horse Shoe Farm at the close of the school year in June and again just before a new one begins in August, these immersive days were designed around a simple idea: the people who nurture our young people deserve to be nurtured, too.

Each RESTORE retreat welcomed 30 local educators for a day centered on nervous system reset and renewal— with guided reflection, movement, time outdoors, self-care, healthy food, and space simply to be together.

Educators often have fewer opportunities than peers in other fields to step away for retreats, professional development, or even meaningful pauses. We were grateful to help sponsor these retreats and support Lauren and Rachel in creating space for local educators to reconnect, recharge, and restore—because investing in the well-being of educators is an investment in the students, families, and communities they serve.

Did you know Pisgah Health Foundation serves as the fiscal sponsor for FWRD Transylvania?

That means sharing administrative and financial resources so FWRD can stay focused on the important work of long-term recovery. We share space, too—FWRD now works alongside us at the Keeley House at 153 W. Jordan Street.

We’re proud to share resources with partners doing great work for our community. 💚
