Summer hut trips are all about choosing your own adventure at your own pace 🌲🏔️

Wake up for a mountain sunrise, spend the day hiking or biking, watch for wildlife, and end the evening with music, stargazing, and stories in a cozy cabin ✨

Whether you’re exploring local trails, learning about the flora and fauna, packing a picnic, or simply enjoying a hammock nap — there’s no wrong way to do hut life.

What's your favorite backcountry hut trip pastime?

Trade alarms for alpine sunrises, dusty singletrack, and cold drinks at the hut 🍻🚵‍♂️⛰️

A few days off-grid, riding ridge lines, climbing through wildflowers, and ending each day with good food, tired legs, and stunning mountain views. Grab your mountain bike, your biking crew and book your summer hut trip!

More of a hiker? Head to the hut on foot and explore the Colorado backcountry at a different pace! 🥾

No cell service. No rush. Just bikes, trails, and the mountains.

Hutmaster Spotlight: Mac McNamara II (Hutmaster since 2021)

What's it like to do a Hutmaster shift?

To do a hutmaster "shift" is the best reason to embrace getting out into our local mountains while also helping facilitate others to have the best experience doing the same in these magical cabins.

What is your favorite part of being a Hutmaster?

My favorite part is just being out there.  Beautiful mountains and skin track therapy while preserving the off-grid lifestyle, in the most amazing settings. The other great part is sharing a love for skiing and snowboarding with the other crazy people that enjoy hiking miles into the mountains and staying off-grid to do so.

What do you wish visitors knew about Hutmasters?

I hope people know how big of a community of love goes into making these cabins possible.  From the first time volunteers all the way to the president of SHA.  Knowing
the stories and history behind each cabin is crucial to fully embracing each cabin.

Thanks for all your work keeping the huts warm and inviting Mac!

We love hearing about the little details that make hut life even better — warm boots, dry gloves, and happy skiers. Hut trips are all about the experience, the memories with friends, and the feeling of an adventure deep in the backcountry! Keep the stories coming. 🔥

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the fun and fabulous moms who inspire adventure, nurture curiosity, and pass down a love for the outdoors. 🌿🏔️

Cheers to the women leading the way — on the trail, in the mountains, and beyond. 💛

Summit Huts is pleased to welcome David Brown, who joined the organization in March as our new Volunteer and Operations Coordinator. A Virginia native and University of Virginia graduate now rooted in Breckenridge, David brings seven years of operations and project management experience in consulting.

Since taking his AIARE 1 in 2021, hut trips and winter backcountry adventures have been one of his favorite parts of life in Colorado. He began volunteering with Summit Huts last fall, joining the Advisory Council in January, and ultimately jumping at the chance to step into this part-time role when it opened up.

Outside of SHA, David is active across Summit County in causes he cares about, including youth mountain bike coaching, food bank volunteering, and sustainable waste management. We're thrilled to have him.

There are some seriously passionate individuals that make Summit Huts so great! Volunteer of the Year in 1993, Hutmaster, Operations Manager, are all titles Dan Munyon has held with Summit Huts. Through so many seasons, he has invested incredible time and effort to keep these mountain refuges warm and inviting. Thanks Dan!

A big thanks to our Hutmasters who work so hard to keep our huts clean, maintained and stocked!

This winter, they replaced glass on the broken wood stove at Francie's, removed trees from the trails after a wind storm, removed phones from the composting toilets, hauled heavy gear up to the huts, and so much more! This fabulous crew works hard to keep the huts in top shape for outdoor adventurers!
