Take a peek at the work of Jade Lowder, one of our Crankists (Crankie Artists) ✨

Jade has made art his whole life! With BFA and MFA in painting, he continues to create art mostly in the form of comics and community art projects, like crankies or a large dragon-like lantern creature. Using mostly a whole bunch of sharpies, Jade is bringing to life a story inspired by bedtime tales, the history of iiniskim and its connection to the Blackfeet community.

Are you Crankie curious? Do you want to see behind the scenes? Would you like to meet the artists? Then stop in to a Crankie Open House!

Everyone is welcome to view the Crankies up close, chat with the artists, and learn how Crankies are made ✨

Open Houses are Saturday November 14th from 3-4pm and Sunday November 15th from 1-2pm at Beall Park Recreation Center. No reservations are needed for this event, just pop in, say hi, and stick around for the performances (which do require reservations! Spots are going fast!)

It's time to meet our Crankie Artists... or Crankists, as we've been calling them recently.

Kate Weiss is a self-taught batik and mixed media artist! She used wax resist batiking to create not one but two beautiful and vibrant Crankies based on the poem Honeybees by Paul Fleischman. Kate brought in the greats to perform with her, too: Kate Britton and Naomi Shafer

Crankie Fest FAQs!
This video of last year’s Crankie Fest is really the best way to show you what it’s like, but let’s break it down below.

Q: What is a Crankie?
A: A Crankie is a moving picture show consisting of a very long illustrated scroll rolled up in a box. The scroll is cranked across an opening in the box, hence the name.

Q: What is Crankie Fest?
A: Crankie Fest is a series of shows featuring original crankies - all illustrated by local artists - performed before your eyes. The shows include live performance, puppetry, music, and sound effects. In other words, an intimate, analog, enchanting experience.

Q: Who can attend?
A: All shows are free and open to the public, but seating is very limited so reservations are required. You can reserve seats on our website, which is linked in our bio. The shows are best suited for ages 5 and up because of subject material and length of show.

Q: Where and when?
A: Belgrade Shows | Belgrade Library and Community Center | November 7th
Bozeman Shows | Beall Park Recreation Center | November 13th-15th

Q: How can I learn more about Crankies?
A: Attend an Open House where you can meet the artists, peek inside a Crankie box and even crank one yourself! Open houses are before the Bozeman shows on November 14th and 15th.

Join us for our 4th Annual Crankie Fest where we will explore extraordinary storytelling that takes us Out of the Box. A crankie is an illustrated-scroll in a box (also known as a moving panorama) that tells a story. This year’s artists and performers will take their stories quite literally out of the crankie box with unique puppetry, performance, audience participation, live music and sound effects.

Belgrade Shows | Belgrade Library and Community Center | November 7th
Bozeman Shows | Beall Park Recreation Center | November 13th-15th.

Shows are free, but reservations are required. Crankie shows are best suited for ages 5 to adult.
