This , meet our answer to food waste and hunger in Boulder.

In our direct-to-community model, food moves straight from where it's sold or grown to where people are. Cutting out the middle steps allows us to rescue produce with a shorter shelf-life. Residents decide what happens next: They run their own distribution, on their own terms.

Gaps like this are common. Individuals or families land just above the cutoff for assistance, then stretch every dollar. Rent and bills come first. Food is often the first thing to go.

Our No-Cost Grocery Program exists for exactly this reason: food delivered directly to the community, no qualifying required. 💚 Thank you for your part in making this possible.

Boulder sits on the traditional homelands of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute peoples. Long before we rescued food or rode past these fields on delivery routes, this land was cared for by Indigenous communities, and it still is today.

On , we're lifting up the work of organizations like Harvest of All First Nations. Their mission is to restore Indigenous-led food sovereignty and cultural continuity by reconnecting people with land as a living relative.

In 2025, HAFN invested $57K in Indigenous-led food production and equitable food access. They also harvested 522 pounds of culturally significant food including corn, squash, chiles, and medicinal plants, which we helped to distribute to 191 BIPOC and 43 low-income households.

Beyond the harvest, HAFN runs educational programs spanning Traditional Ecological Knowledge, water conservation, climate awareness, seed saving, herbalism, and more.

Food security isn't just about access. It's about dignity, choice, and connection, and all three affect mental health. 💚

When people get to choose what food they eat, when they get it, and who delivers it… they gain more than groceries. They gain a say in their own life. That kind of autonomy is tied directly to mental health and well-being.

The structure of our No-Cost Grocery Programs also has an effect we didn't set out to create: connection. One Grocery Program Coordinator told us, "The one interesting note is how lonely every resident seems to be. They love being called, and pick-up turns into a social visit."

A food delivery becomes a reason to check in on a neighbor and have a conversation. For older adults and people who are isolated, that connection can matter as much as the food itself.

This , we're thinking about all the ways food access shapes well-being, and we're committed to keeping that conversation going.

30-50% of the food grown in the U.S. gets thrown away. At the same time, entire communities don’t have nutritious food.

That's not a shortage of food. It's a shortage of access.

The Food Rescue Alliance works to close that gap. We help new food rescue organizations get off the ground, working through the legal and logistical questions every new org faces. It's also a peer learning network of food rescues across the country sharing what works, and addressing common challenges, so no one has to build this alone.

A bigger network means a louder voice to advocate for food access at the root.

Our Co-Director, Hayden Dansky, is speaking at the National Zero Waste Conference this year! 🎉

On October 22, Hayden will present "Community-Led Food Rescue Powered By Collaboration," sharing how Food Rescue Alliance's network of local food rescue organizations is building collective power and advancing food access across the country.

Every community's food system looks different. Different grocery chains, different farms, different cultural needs, different barriers. No single model can address all of that from the top down. Local food rescues know their communities best, allowing them to more effectively reduce the barriers to food access.

This is a chance for people working on food waste and food access nationwide to hear directly how FRA's model works, and why local, community-led solutions beat a one-size-fits-all approach.

Most food assistance comes with a catch: an application, a waiting room, and paperwork that asks more than it needs to.

For some populations, like immigrant families, that paperwork isn't just inconvenient. It's a risk. For older adults and people with mobility barriers, lack of transportation can stop them from getting food.

We built our model to remove those barriers entirely.

Couriers move fresh produce straight from grocery stores and gardens to preschools, daycares, and affordable housing sites across Boulder. Residents and staff take it from there, distributing food on their own terms, within their own community.
