A heartfelt thank-you to our gracious host Dr. Jody Mathie for bringing people together in support of There With Care and to everyone who joined us last Friday for such a special evening. We’re grateful for the generosity, connection, and compassion that make our community so meaningful.

Care can look surprisingly ordinary.

It can look like groceries for the week. Gas in the tank for another drive to the hospital. Everyday essentials already taken care of when a family’s time and energy are being pulled in so many directions.

During Lars’ experience with leukemia, There With Care had the privilege of being one part of the circle around his family, providing practical support including groceries, gas cards, and other everyday essentials.

Those things could not change what his family was facing. But they could create a little more room for his family to focus their energy where they wanted it most: on Lars, on one another, and on being together.

Through The Red Balloon, gifts made in Lars’ honor help carry that same spirit of practical care forward to other families navigating a child’s medical crisis. ❤️

A few things Lars loved. ❤️

The color red.
Books and pictures.
Music.
Sesame Street, especially Elmo.
His stuffed elephant, Lovie.

And maybe most of all, Lars had a beautiful laugh that could make anyone’s day better. His laughter had a way of spreading to everyone in the room.

Those little pieces of Lars are woven throughout The Red Balloon. This birthday legacy is not about defining him by the hardest part of his story. It is about honoring the things that made Lars, Lars. 🎈

This fall, we’re honoring Lars. 🎈

Lars was joyful, gentle, brave, and deeply loved. He loved the color red, books and pictures, music, Sesame Street, especially anything with Elmo, his stuffed elephant Lovie, and the people around him. Though he was nonverbal, his beautiful hazel eyes were incredibly expressive, and his smile and laugh could say so much.

October 19 is Lars’ birthday.

From September 19 through October 19, his family and There With Care are inviting the community to be part of The Red Balloon, a birthday legacy rooted in the things Lars loved and the love his story continues to inspire.

There are a few simple ways to be part of it: make a gift in Lars’ honor, send a book or toy, or simply share his story with someone in your own circle.

Most of all, we hope The Red Balloon gives people a chance to know a little more about Lars and carry some of that love forward. ❤️
