Community Boat Building, founded in 2007, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring real world experience and academic skills together to build not only a traditional boat, but also excitement around learning among low-income students in Boston Public Schools. CBB has been working with Boston Public schools for over 6 years to provide students with boat building skills, on-the-water e
xperiences, history research and oral presentations, swim lessons, rowing skills, hands-on science activities, and travel/camping/sailing experiences. Boat building develops a variety of skills, enhancing and connecting skills learned in the classroom with real world experience. Each school year CBB introduces 100 fourth and fifth grade students to the accessibility and wonders of Boston Harbor while reinforcing core academic subjects--math, science, social studies, and literacy so that experiential learning becomes an integrated part of the student’s education, bridging urban life and natural life to strengthen learning and community.
