A spring composition in chartreuse, purple, and velvety black is taking shape at the entrance to the Gardens 🌿

These six concrete planters were designed using the classic “Thriller, Filler, Spiller” approach, where each container layers height, texture, fullness, and trailing movement to create bold seasonal impact from every angle.

Framed by natural willow structures and set atop classic Maine dry-stacked stone walls, the planters will continue to grow and change over the coming weeks.

Full plant list below -

Thriller:
Lauren’s Grape Poppy - Papaver somniferum

Filler:
Carex testacea ‘Prairie Fire’
Viola ‘Black Delight’ and ‘PurpleFace’

Spiller :
‘Indian Mint’ - Satureja douglasii

Branch dome:
Miyabe Willow - Salix miyabeana

Inspiration is found at the Gardens! Texture, color, and movement all around invite a closer look—and creativity emerges from careful observation. Deepen your connection to the natural world through art classes.

Through botanical illustration, photography, and hands-on workshops (like the paper flowers pictured by Artist Amity Libby), participants spend time observing, interpreting, and creating in direct conversation with the landscape.

If it’s your first visit—or even your fifth—a guided tour is one of the best ways to experience the Gardens.

Free tours are offered daily at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., making it easy to build into your plans. A Highlights Tour is a great way to get oriented, especially if you’re new to the gardens.

For a deeper look, specialty tours like the Wetlands Hike or Let’s Talk Biodiversity Tour explore specific landscapes and ecosystems in more detail.

Pre-registration is recommended for specialty tours. https://www.mainegardens.org/visit/plan-your-visit/tours/?utm_source=FacebookPost&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Education&utm_content=Tours

🌿 Bloom Alert: Opening Weekend! 🌿
We’re opening Friday, May 1—and the gardens are already beginning to stir.

Say hello to Helleborus x hybridus ‘Blue Metallic Lady’, one of the early risers bringing subtle beauty and rich, moody color to the landscape.

We’re also spotting Helleborus multifidus subsp. hercegovinus. With its fresh green flowers and finely textured foliage, it's an understated bloom that brings a completely different look to the early spring garden.

Opening weekend carries the unmistakable feeling of fresh air, soft color returning, and the promise of a season just beginning. It’s the perfect time to step back into nature, slow your pace, and reconnect.

Exploring Guardians of the Seeds by Thomas Dambo is an exciting part of the Gardens experience, and it’s all included with regular admission.

Planning your troll adventure? Here are our top tips before you head out.

The five giant trolls are scattered throughout the woods—one is in the central gardens, with the rest about a half-mile apart. If you’re hoping to find all five, plan for about a three-mile walk.

Our recommendation: don’t feel like you have to see them all in one visit. Many guests explore a few at a time and come back again. (Consider becoming a member, it pays for itself in two visits!)

Expect a walk—wear good shoes and bring your water bottle.

Here's a general time guide:
• 1–2 trolls: about 45 minutes
• 3 trolls: about 90 minutes
• All 5 trolls: 2.5–3 hours
• Trolls + seeds: up to 4–5 hours

Take your time and enjoy it!
