We are proud to see Alabama Veteran represented on a national stage.

As a keynote speaker and panelist at the NGAUS 2026 148th General Conference & Exhibition, one of our Board Members, Col. Chris “Elroy” Stricklin, had the opportunity to represent Alabama Veteran on a national stage and share the work we are doing through our Warrior Retreats and Post-Traumatic Growth programs.

Through his remarks and panel discussion, Chris was able to speak directly about how Alabama Veteran is helping veterans move beyond simply coping with difficult experiences and toward renewed purpose, connection, resilience, and growth.

Chris had the opportunity to share the stage with Steven Grayhm, Director of the film Sheepdog, and Rich Ganley with Recharge Room, for an important conversation focused on the challenges veterans and service members face, and the work being done to help them build connection, purpose, resilience, and growth beyond those challenges.

For Alabama Veteran, this was more than an opportunity to participate in a national conference. It was an opportunity to bring the message behind our Warrior Retreats to a much larger audience and show that healing does not have to be the finish line. Growth can come next.

We are incredibly thankful to NGAUS for including Alabama Veteran in this conversation, we are beyond proud of Chris for representing our organization and mission, and excited to see the work happening here in Alabama becoming part of a larger national discussion.

There's something that happens to you when you've been close to death — your own or someone else's. The ordinary stops being ordinary.

The cup of coffee in the morning. The sound of your kid talking too loud. The way the light looks right after a storm. Things that most people walk right past — you notice them. And sometimes that noticing feels like grief. And sometimes it feels like gratitude. Often both at the same time.

On August 26, 2021, a su***de bomber attacked Abbey Gate at the Kabul airport during the evacuation of Afghanistan. Thirteen U.S. service members, eleven Marines, a Navy corpsman, and a Soldier, were killed while helping civilians reach safety.

We say their names. Never forgotten, forever honored.

This weekend was about more than simply getting away; it was about choosing to invest in each other.

We are incredibly thankful for every couple who joined us for our Marriage Warrior Retreat and had the courage to dig deeper into their marriage, have meaningful conversations, work through challenges, and strengthen the bond they share.

Marriage takes work. It takes patience, grace, communication, forgiveness, and sometimes the willingness to have the conversations that are easier to avoid. This weekend, these couples chose to lean in instead of pulling away.

We are grateful for the trust they placed in Alabama Veteran and for the vulnerability, laughter, encouragement, and growth we witnessed throughout the retreat.

Our hope is that every couple left reminded of something important: you don’t have to have a perfect marriage to have a strong one. You just have to keep choosing each other.

To every couple who showed up and did the work — thank you. Keep building. Keep communicating. Keep fighting for your marriage, not against each other.

And to all of our supporters who make weekends like this possible, thank you for investing not only in our veterans, but in their marriages and families as well.
