For children experiencing food insecurity, school lunch can be more than a midday meal. It can be a reliable source of nourishment during the school day — helping children stay focused and energized while giving families one less meal to worry about.

With 1 in 5 Louisiana children experiencing food insecurity, access to school meals matters. Every child deserves to know there will be food waiting for them when they sit down at the lunch table.

When SNAP participation falls, it’s easy to look at the numbers and assume fewer people need help.

But hunger doesn’t disappear when SNAP benefits do.

From July 2025 to June 2026, the number of Louisianans receiving SNAP fell by 173,471 — including 82,064 fewer children. Those numbers tell us about participation, but they don’t tell the whole story about hunger or why someone may no longer be receiving benefits.

For families already stretching every dollar, losing food assistance can mean making impossible choices between groceries, rent, utilities, medicine and transportation.

Our team traveled to Shreveport to celebrate Martha Marak's retirement and honor her years of dedication, leadership, and service to the fight against hunger in Northwest Louisiana!

Martha has made a lasting impact on her community, and we’re so grateful for all she has done to help neighbors facing hunger. Congratulations on your retirement, Martha! We’re wishing you the best in this next chapter.

As we celebrate Martha, we’re also excited to welcome Ginger Gustavson as the new Executive Director of the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana. Congratulations to Ginger on this new role — we’re looking forward to all that’s ahead!
