The Teach For America Greater Baton Rouge Regional Board recently gathered for a retreat focused on our region’s current landscape, TFA’s role in the local talent ecosystem, and the actions we can take together to strengthen our impact.

Throughout the day, board members engaged in conversation about the state of the region, heard from alumni leaders during a lunch panel, and offered strategic guidance on key opportunities ahead. The retreat also created space to identify concrete ways board members can support regional priorities.

We were especially grateful to hear from local alumni Chloe Wiley (Dolly Diamonds), Rachel Brown (New Schools for Baton Rouge), William Minton (Canopy Tutoring), Nasha Patel (Watershed), Emilia Urban-Guidroz (Louisiana Department of Education), and Aaron Frumin (Uncommonconstruction). Their stories helped illustrate the many ways TFA alumni continue to lead, serve, and create opportunities across Greater Baton Rouge.

Thank you to our board members and alumni panelists for bringing their experience, questions, connections, and commitment to the table. We left the retreat energized by the strength of this community and ready to turn thoughtful guidance into action for students, educators, and families across our region.

Congrats Tayler (GBR ‘20) and Michaela (GBR ‘21)!!

The DREAM. LEARN. LEAD. torch has officially passed to Master Teachers Tayler Pierre and Michaela Conway. Together, they bring a fresh, dynamic energy that elevates both teacher effectiveness and student achievement. Their collaboration is seamless. Watching them brainstorm and feed off each other's ideas in ILT, Core, and Cluster is inspiring.

Bringing a wealth of expertise to the team, Ms. Conway leads the Math/Science cluster while Ms. Pierre facilitates ELA/Electives. To mirror our administrative model, they co-support both clusters, ensuring strong alignment across all subjects. Backed by strategically designed ILT and Cluster documentation, their leadership makes every session run effortlessly. We are thrilled to have them driving our mission as we live out our new hashtag and buzzword: and let's MAXIMIZE. Pictured left Dr. Robinson (Principal), Ms. Conway (Master Teacher), Ms. Pierre (Master Teacher), Dr. James (Assistant Principal), and Mr. Chiquet (Associate Principal).

We’re proud to spotlight another powerhouse alumni speaker, Kira Orange Jones (GBR ’00), who will be speaking at Teach For America’s 35th Anniversary Summit in Las Vegas this October in just 38 days.

Kira serves as Chief Executive Officer of Teach Plus, where she sets the organization’s vision and impact strategy and leads its work to develop teachers as leaders in education policy and practice. Her leadership is helping elevate teacher voice, strengthen the profession, and advance a more equitable and excellent education for students.

Before joining Teach Plus, Kira served as Senior Vice President at Teach For America and founded the TFA Systems Impact Lab, advising regions nationwide on strategy and systems change. She also spent a decade leading Teach For America Greater New Orleans, expanding its alumni presence from 100 to more than 1,000.

Kira began her career as an elementary school teacher in Louisiana and later served three terms on Louisiana’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, helping advance teacher pay, early childhood education, public charter schools, and postsecondary readiness. We’re proud to celebrate her extraordinary leadership and see another Greater Baton Rouge alum represented on this national stage. 💙

Teach For America Greater Baton Rouge is deeply grateful to Ed Jimenez for his years of service on our Regional Board of Directors.

Ed brought thoughtful leadership, a strong commitment to Louisiana, and a clear belief that education drives opportunity and lasting community impact. In reflecting on why this work matters, he shared, “Strong educators create strong students, and quality professional development strengthens the adults leading in classrooms.” He also emphasized that investing in teachers and students helps build a qualified workforce, strengthen communities, and create pathways of opportunity for the next generation.

That perspective has been a meaningful contribution to our board and our work across Greater Baton Rouge. Ed, thank you for sharing your time, expertise, and partnership with TFA GBR. We are grateful for your service and for the many ways you have helped advance a brighter future for students, educators, and communities across Louisiana.
