Today in American history, the world exhaled. On the 81st anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II, the U.S. public first heard the official announcement that the war was ending—what many called Victory Day. The news set off an eruption of joy: church bells rang, ticker tape fell, and Times Square became a sea of strangers hugging. Yet the moment was also the culmination of years of brutal fighting across the Pacific and intense diplomacy that led to unconditional surrender.

A lesser-known detail: the announcement timing was a scramble. Even after Tokyo signaled acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration, Washington had to race to translate, verify, and coordinate with Allied capitals before President Truman could speak—so much so that some newspapers ran extra editions on rumor alone. And V-J Day didn’t end America’s global role; it ushered in an occupation that rewrote Japan’s constitution, expanded civil liberties, and reshaped the U.S. presence in Asia. The war was over, but the American century—its promises and tensions—was just beginning.

The Code Talkers

Today, we honor the legacy of the Navajo Code Talkers, whose courage, resilience, and native language forever changed the course of history.

During World War II, the Marine Corps turned to a method of communication that Japanese intelligence could never crack: the Navajo language.

In 1942, a group of Navajo Marines developed an unbreakable oral code that allowed for fast and secure communication during battles throughout the Pacific Theater of Operations.

Because of the code's strategic value, their heroic contributions remained secret until 1968.

Semper Fidelis.

💜 In Honor of National Purple Heart Day 💜

Today, we pause to remember the brave men and women who were wounded or gave their lives in service to our nation. The Purple Heart is more than a medal — it is a testament to sacrifice, courage, and the price of the freedom we hold dear.

To every Purple Heart recipient: your wounds, seen and unseen, tell a story of selflessness that words can never fully honor. And to the families who have loved, cared for, and mourned alongside them — we hold you in our hearts today and always.

At the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, we are humbled to serve those who gave so much. Today, and every day, we say thank you. 🇺🇸

We honor you. We remember you. We stand with you.

🎂 251 years old and STILL the most powerful Army on the face of the earth! 🎂🇺🇸

On June 14, 1775 — before the United States of America even existed — the Continental Army was established. Think about that. The Army came FIRST. It literally fought for this nation to be born.

251 years of standing watch. 251 years of answering the call. 251 years of sending the bravest among us into the most dangerous places on earth — so the rest of us never have to.

Louisiana is home to thousands of proud Army veterans and soldiers serving right now. We see you. We honor you. We are so incredibly proud of you. 💪🎖️

Happy Birthday, U.S. Army. Here's to 251 more. 🥂

🇺🇸 It's Flag Day!

Old Glory. 50 stars. 13 stripes. And every single one of them means something.

Today we honor the American flag — the symbol our veterans carried into battle, draped over caskets, and brought home with pride.

To Louisiana's more than 250,000 veterans: thank you for defending everything that flag represents. 🙏

Drop a 🇺🇸 in the comments and tell us what the flag means to you!

📌 The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs is proud to serve those who served under it.
