Last week educators Justin Allison (EL/Social Studies), Scott Bayer (Social Studies), and Assistant Principal, Bob Dobbertin, attended the IL Democracy Schools Annual Conference. Their professional development day was well spent networking, gaining valuable resources, and collaborating with educators, administrators and experts from across the country to promote civic learning and engagement. The theme for this year is Civic Ready, Future Ready.

We are especially proud that Batavia HS has been a Democracy School affiliate since 2017 and has sent representatives to the conference annually to continue the essential work of empowering our students to be active participants in their community, and engage civically at all levels.

It is with great sadness that we share former IEA President Reginald “Reg” Weaver, trailblazer for collective bargaining rights in Illinois, passed away on Tuesday at 86.

Reg was an absolute legend. He had a gift at bringing people together and helped transform our union into the powerful force it is today. Reg was the first Black president of the IEA, serving from 1981 to 1987. He later went on to serve as president of the National Education Association, from 2002 to 2008.
