Colors of late summer at The Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary

Great workday on Friday at The Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary! Only a few of the team are visible in this photo. We watered new plantings, we cleaned the walkways, we trimmed back plants overhanging the walkways, and we found "stuff" - yes, those are two potatoes. Not rotten, not bad in any way. The tiny skull is probably a squirrel? The large nut is a Hickory, there's a random golf ball, and the dollar bill? I guess we're finally getting paid for our work. It's always interesting at The Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary...

Hello Gardeners!

Thank you to Deb, Dennis, Dawn, Gaile, Melissa and Terri for your help last week! Your hard work was much appreciated!

Please join us for a work day at the Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary on Friday, September 4th from 9:00 to 12:00. (Please note fall start time. I promise it will be cooler by then.)
We will be on the west (prairie) side just long enough to water the newer plants, then we will move around to the east (wooded) side to w**d, water, trim and clear paths. Please bring gloves, drinking water, eye protection, clippers, loppers and a w**d digger.

Please save the date: our next regular work day will be Saturday, October 3rd at 9:00.

The Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) is in bloom at The Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary - what a pollinator magnet! While I stood - almost in the middle of the patch - I was surrounded by several types of bumblebees, a few honeybees, and several types of wasps. Just a feeding fest for all of them! I kept trying for a photo with the trifecta of wasps, bumblebees, and honeybees, but they just didn't cooperate. There are a couple of bumblebees in this shot... and a few others out of frame...

A workday at The Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary is always a reason to celebrate, especially when we've received a dozen plants from Nancy H, one of our BPDG members. All the plants went in on the prairie side of the sanctuary, and were watered so they will hopefully thrive. We also pulled so much more bindw**d (ugh!), trimmed a bit, watered previously planted items, and generally spiffed up the sanctuary.
