An Indiana man has been charged after a toddler suffered a catastrophic brain injury following possible exposure to 7-hydroxymitragynine, also known as 7-OH, according to law enforcement.

A detective said the synthetic has been identified as the likely source of the child's exposure, while the family said the child has been prescribed a wheelchair that will fit him until he is six years old.

The case comes amid reports of addiction, death and financial ruin as officials move to crack down on synthetic products, which kratom advocates say “masquerade” as natural products.

As more communities move to restrict synthetic kratom sales, health officials warn of businesses offering frankenstein "Cat Claw" products that have allegedly been found to contain 7-OH, MGPI (Pseudo) and MGM-15.
