YWCA MDI is on a mission to eliminate racism; empower women; stand up for social justice; help families, and strengthen communities.

YWCA Mounst Desert Island is the only YWCA in Maine still offering safe, affordable lodging for women and girls — a mission that has grown into a full community center, with programs supporting local students, women in crisis and neighbors of all ages across MDI. We are also woven into the rhythm of community life on MDI, with beloved annual traditions like the Carol Dyer Luminaria Evening, our free Thanksgiving community meal, and the holiday Children's Bazaar. Throughout the year, we host a senior chair exercise class three times a week — just one more way we bring neighbors together, all year round. We join YWCA USA in mourning the loss of Dolores Huerta.

Dolores Huerta spent more than six decades standing up for workers, women, and immigrant communities. From the grape boycott to her work through the Dolores Huerta Foundation, she has shown that justice is built by people who refuse to give up.

Today we honor her legacy and recommit to the work.

It is with deep sadness that we at YWCA USA mourn the passing of civil rights leader, United Farm Workers (UFW) co-founder, and elder Dolores Huerta, whose decades of organizing and unwavering commitment to justice transformed our country and inspired generations.

Today, we celebrate her extraordinary life, honor the movement she helped build, and recommit ourselves to carrying her legacy forward. 🧡

How can we help raise awareness about Domestic Violence and the impacts it has on those in our community?

We can educate ourselves on what DV actually looks like - the signs and impacts on those experiencing violence.

We can listen to Survivors without judgement, and believe them when they share their experiences.

We can speak up when we hear someone make a joke minimizing violence, or challenge behaviors that normalize abuse when we see them.

We can know which resources are available to help Survivors of Domestic Violence, so we know where to refer others to help when needed.
