The 2026 Dawnland Festival marked a new moment of national connection through a collaboration with The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage’s 2026 Of the People: Smithsonian Festival of Festivals.

After being denied its customary spot on the National Mall, the Folklife Festival embarked on a nine-month journey through America’s local traditions.

‘“Getting to a place where our language is in these parks and it is educational … erasing that or setting that back has big implications for how far we’ve come,” said Maulian Bryant, the Wabanaki Alliance’s Executive Director.’

Signs and exhibits about slavery, climate change, and Native Americans have been removed from national parks across the country as part of the Trump administration’s campaign to eliminate what it calls disparaging material.

Good news from Wabanaki Public Health & Wellness and Maine Public

"MaineCare has received federal approval to reimburse traditional Indigenous healthcare practices.

Lisa Sockabasin, the co-CEO of Wabanaki Public Health and Wellness, said the nonprofit already offers smudging, sweat lodge, and talking circle ceremonies. She said being able to bill for these services will help the center expand its offerings, and the decision itself offers healing."
