Civic Works

Civic Works Civic Works is a Baltimore area nonprofit and an AmeriCorps organization. We strengthen Baltimore.

Civic Works operates education, community improvement, and green job programs. Every year, over 200 of our AmeriCorps members tutor and mentor students, build community parks and gardens, help homeowners conserve energy, recruit volunteers, grow food for low-income residents, rehabilitate abandoned houses, involve parents in Baltimore City schools, and make homes safer for older adults. We also train 200 Baltimore residents each year for employment in the healthcare and green jobs industries.

Today, we presented the Kathleen Kennedy Townsend Scholarship Award to Samirah Jones, a 2025 AmeriCorps member serving as a social work intern with Civic Works’ Summer Experience in Aging program.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend co-founded Civic Works in 1993, and the Scholarship for Social Change was created in 2020 to honor her lifelong commitment to service.

Throughout her service, Samirah has demonstrated a strong commitment to her work and the communities she serves. Her dedication and passion for supporting others truly reflect the spirit of AmeriCorps.
Samirah shared that her goal is to work both in policy and private practice to help ensure that communities are represented and that the needs of individuals are understood at both the policy and community levels. Her vision of serving as a bridge between systems and the people she supports speaks to the kind of leadership and advocacy this scholarship is meant to uplift.

Congratulations Samirah! 🎉

This week, Karen Hall, a resident of Baltimore’s Harlem Park and Sandtown neighborhoods and a Clean Corps Community Liaison, connected with our Clean Corps teams to share her appreciation for the positive impact their work is making across the community.

“Clean Corps does no wrong. If our neighborhood still looked the way it did before they came to clean it up, people in our community wouldn’t be getting along. Trash causes tension.”

Karen also highlighted how easy it is to connect with our Clean Corps team and praised their responsiveness when assistance is needed. She extended thanks to Clean Corps Supervisor William Sullivan for his leadership and dedication to supporting Baltimore’s neighborhoods.
