Over 10 million gallons of raw, untreated liquid f***s overflowed into Baltimore's waterways over the weekend. Aside from harmful bacteria and pathogens, sewage carries huge amounts of nutrients, toxic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other pollutants directly into our streams and Harbor. This makes our work to ensure that the City's sewage consent decree is implemented properly all the more important as we face an increasing number of extreme weather events in the near future. In the coming weeks, see the impacts of all this sewage on our waterways at www.HarborAlert.org.
Beginning tomorrow, 6/1, we'll be posting exclusively to our Blue Water Baltimore page. Be sure to follow us there to stay up to date on all things Waterkeeper!
As parts of Baltimore and Howard counties flooded Sunday, the heavy rains were also washing 10 million gallons of sewage-contaminated stormwater into the Jones Falls. It was one of the largest discharges of waste city officials have reported in recent years.
