Fall Garden Stewardship Network Meeting at Masonville Cove

Join us for a dusk walk through Access Zone 1 to learn how the nation’s first federally designated urban wildlife refuge is protected and cared for. Afterward, we’ll plant pollinator container gardens with 3 native perennials inside the Masonville Cove Environmental Center. Each participant takes theirs home to overwinter, divide, or share with a neighbor.

There’s a butterfly that can only exist because of one tree. 🦋

The zebra swallowtail lays its eggs only on pawpaws, and its caterpillars eat nothing else. No pawpaw, no zebra swallowtail.

The pawpaw is the largest edible fruit native to North America. The fruit isn’t ready until around the first frost in the fall, and you shouldn’t pick it until it’s ready to fall off. It looks a little rough, but it tastes like a mango-banana.

Pawpaws are also a great plant to grow for their fruit, and they’re the host plant for the zebra swallowtail. Wherever you find pawpaws, keep an eye out for these butterflies.

Baltimore's night sky is busier than you think. Join us this October for a free evening bat walk and meet some of the city's most underappreciated neighbors. These insect-eaters do pest control for our gardens, farms, and forests every night, and they could use a little help from us too.

Part 2 of our Streamside Forest Garden assessment is here! 🌳 This time, we're digging into the soil.

Our fellows pulled soil samples a few feet down in two spots: one right next to the stream and one up in the uplands. One came up with a bluish bottom and the other came up orangey-copper. 👀

Join your neighbors for an afternoon of fall fun in Springfield Woods. Take a guided nature walk with our forest steward, Mr. Francis, and learn to identify the trees and leaves of the season. Kids and families can make fall crafts, and everyone can stay for c***r, snacks and a good time with neighbors. 🍎

What happens to a forest that floods all the time? 🌊🌳

This summer, our fellows surveyed Streamside Forest Garden, a forest on a very active floodplain along Maiden's Choice Run. The results were surprising: some trees struggle here, others do well, and some native plants are hanging on against the odds.

How do you measure something you can't see? 🤔

Meet the soil slide hammer — our tool for measuring soil compaction. Compacted soil makes it harder for water, air, and roots to move through the ground, and that can mean trouble for a forest patch.
