What do you know about the original Marylanders? Find out by attending the AAUW Baltimore Branch Monthly Meeting in the Parlor at Grace Methodist Church on Thursday, November 20, 6:30 – 8:45 pm. Grace United Methodist Church is located at 5407 North Charles Street (Northern Parkway intersection), Baltimore, MD 21210.

Dr. Katherine Sterner of Towson University will discuss “An Archeology of Indigenous Maryland” and tell us a bit about her career in anthropology. Dr. Katherine Sterner is an Assistant Professor at Towson University and Director of TU’s Baltimore Community Archaeology Lab (BCAL). BCAL “strengthens historic preservation in the greater Baltimore area through undergraduate community service-learning, civic engagement and project-based ethical stewardship of the past for the present.”

Dr. Sterner’s popularity with students shows on the website “Rate My Professor”—for example, “Dr. Sterner is an incredible professor. She’s very knowledgeable, always available to ask questions, and is very funny. This course was not easy in terms of content but Dr. Sterner still made it manageable despite the difficult topic.”

Dr Sterner will introduce us to the people who lived throughout the Chesapeake Bay region for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. She studies community organization and stone tool manufacture and use among pre-contact Native American groups in the Eastern Woodlands of North America. You can see an interview with Dr. Sterner about explorations in Herring Run Park with her students at the following website: https://www.towson.edu/cla/departments/socioanthrocrim/archaeology-lab/

Dr. Sterner received her B.A. in Anthropology at Penn State University in 2009. She completed her M.S. in 2012 and her Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2018.

Join AAUW Baltimore members for light snacks at 6:30 pm. A short meeting will begin at 7 pm to share information about current and future branch activities. Dr. Sterner’s very interesting program is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Hope to see you there!
