Medical debt is the result of unaffordable healthcare.

It can happen to anyone – to people with and without insurance, to low and high-income people, across racial and gender lines. However, while medical debt can happen to anyone, it disproportionately impacts low-income communities and communities of color.

Our Medical Debt program provides direct assistance and education to Marylanders struggling with hospital debt through our Medical Debt Freedom Fund and a medical debt Know Your Rights guide.

Help is available. Through the Securing Older Adult Resources (SOAR) Program, we work to improve the economic security of older adults in Maryland through direct assistance, research, advocacy, and organizing.

SOAR provides support with the Maryland Homeowners’ and Renters’ Property Tax Credits, earned benefit screenings, and financial counseling, along with consumer education focused on Maryland tax credits, financial exploitation, common scams, and digital literacy. Thanks to our work, three important bills to empower Maryland renters take effect TODAY, October 1st! 🎉🥳👏🎊

➡️ The Fair Chance in Housing Act to ensure returning citizens can access housing

➡️ HB315/SB335 to close loopholes in MD’s fair housing law and stop landlords from using arbitrary credit and income tests for families using housing assistance

➡️ The Fair Housing Disparate Impact Act aligns our state with current federal law for fair housing cases, ensuring protection from discrimination even if the federal administration dismantles the law.

In addition to these important bills taking effect today, two of our priority bills took effect over the summer!

➡️ The Air Conditioning bill to require that landlords of 10+ units keep their A/C working well and to mandate putting A/C in any new or substantial rehab rentals.

➡️ The Safe & Healthy Homes for All Act requires the state to identify and hold accountable the landlords of rental properties with severe health and safety hazards.

Together, these laws ensure more Marylanders can access safe housing. Thanks to everyone who made their voice heard in support of these important laws!
