Black August is about remembering what this country tried to do to Black movements and why we still need to study that history today.

COINTELPRO was a government program that targeted Black liberation organizers and other political movements. It was not passive surveillance. It was active disruption.

Infiltration. Misinformation. Turning people against each other. Discrediting leaders. Breaking trust inside movements on purpose.

The goal was simple. Stop movements from building power.

And it worked in a lot of ways that people still feel today.

Even though COINTELPRO was officially exposed and ended, the tactics did not disappear. They evolved. Today we still see surveillance, criminalization of protest, misinformation, and attempts to isolate or discredit organizers.

Different tools. Same patterns.

That is why Black August matters.

Black August is not just history. It is a reminder to study what happened, understand how movements were targeted, and stay sharp about what we are organizing inside of.

Because if we do not know how movements were broken before, we will miss the signs when it starts happening again.

Don’t just share this. Talk about it in your spaces. Teach it. Keep it alive.
