10-Oct-2025 Americana Garage WRFG 89.3 FM Fridays 8-10 pm. Archives at www.wrfg.org Today would have been the 66th birthday of English pop-rocker Kirsty MacColl, who has the dubious distinction of being the only rock star ever to have been killed by getting run over by a speedboat! Although very popular in the UK, she is most known to Americans for the Christmas song ‘Fairy Tale of New York’ by the Pogues on which she dueted with Shane McGowan. RIP. Countr y songstress Tanya Tucker turns 67 today, and Oct 9 is the birthday of Who bassist/sometime singer/songer John Entwhistle, RIP. Oct 9 also marks the birthdays of both John Lennon (RIP) and his son Sean who turned 50! Sean Lennon once had a psych-folk duo with his girlfriend Charlotte called Ghost of a Sabertooth Tiger, and I saw them at the tiny EARL club in Atlanta circa 2009! Sean was out mingling with the crowd –a real down-to-earth guy. I remember he was wearing a Sgt Pepper-style uniform and cap. He has also worked with Atlanta indie-rockers the Black Lips.
Welcome to town Chicago chamber-rock chanteuse Neko Case to the Variety tonight, Oct 10! Her new record is Neon Grey Midnight Green.

12-Sept-2025 Americana Garage WRFG 89.3 FM Fridays 8-10 pm. Archives at www.wrfg.org With the CBGBs Fest happening in NYC later this month, we chatted with two original members -bassist Ruben Siguenza and guitarist Louie X Erlanger,-of the amazing Mink DeVille band (pictured: Ruben 2nd from Rt; Louie 2nd from LT) ! Originally a roots music club (Country, BlueGrass , Blues) in NYCs Bowery, CBGBs morphed in the mid-70s into the epicenter of the American punk movement, and Mink DeVille was one of the first of that wave to perform there. Connecticut native and singer/songwriter W***y DeVille formed the band after moving to San Francisco and meeting Ruben. They were lured back to NYC by its burgeoning rock scene, and added Louie to the lineup. Mink DeVille made two absolutely stunning major-label albums before W***y broke up the band to embark on a Greek tragedy of a solo career marked by intense highs and lows-and his ultimate death from cancer. A recent documentary –Heaven Stood Still-tells their story. Ruben still lives in SF, previously recorded with the Jakes and is putting a new band together. Louie lives in Vermont and performs original blues as ‘Sunny Lowdown.’ He performed onstage playing guitar with John Lee Ho**er in 1968 at age 16, and has produced such blues greats as RL Burnside. Cheers guys!
Jam packed concert week: LA acoustic big band Dustbowl Revival at Eddies 9/12; Atlanta country -rockers Jeff Evans Porkestra and Garrett Frierich at Eddies 9/13; SF indie-rocker Chuck Prophet at Garden Club 9/14; Atlanta singer/songer Ben Bostick at Eddies 9/16 and theatrical punkers La Dispute at Masquerade 9/17!

The Act did prompt the BBC to add rock music to its playlists, and many of the displaced pirate DJs were hired by the BBC.
RIP to British singer/songer Terry Reid, 75, most famous for turning down the lead- singing jobs in both Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, and Memphis keyboardist/songwriter Bobby Whitlock, 77, who performed on -and co-wrote -7 songs on the Layla album as a member of Derek and the Dominos.
