Women have gained freedoms and opportunities previous generations fought for—so why has research found a decline in women's reported happiness?
Hosai Mojaddidi reflects on what researchers have called the “paradox of declining female happiness” and asks a challenging question: if greater social and sexual freedom was supposed to make women happier, why hasn't happiness necessarily followed?
This excerpt is from Talking with Teachers, hosted by Dr. Abdullah bin Hamid Ali.
What do you think explains the paradox?

Few questions about the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ generate as much controversy today as his marriage to our Mother Aisha bint Abi Bakr (RA).
Was Aisha really nine years old? Could she have been older? How should Muslims understand the historical reports—and should the assumptions of modern society determine how we judge a marriage that took place more than 1,400 years ago?
In this new session of Faith & Society: A Lamppost Series, Dr. Abdullah bin Hamid Ali takes on this difficult subject directly, examining the traditional hadith reports, the historical context of marriage and age, and the remarkable life Aisha lived as one of Islam's greatest scholars and authorities.
The presentation also addresses an important point that is often overlooked: although the traditional report concerning Aisha's age appears in major hadith collections, Dr. Abdullah explains why questioning her precise age is not a rejection of an essential matter of Islamic creed. What did the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teach us about tears, grief, and mercy?

Dr. Abdullah bin Hamid Ali reflects on the Prophetic example of shedding tears during the death of a loved one and explains an important lesson: grief and tears are not contrary to faith. They can be expressions of raḥmah—mercy within the heart.

The believer's heart may be saddened and the eyes may shed tears, while remaining mindful of Allah ﷻ and saying what is pleasing to Him.

This excerpt is from Lamppost Education Initiative's continuing study of the Risālah of Ibn Abī Zayd al-Qayrawānī with Dr. Abdullah bin Hamid Ali.

What did Imam al-Ghazali teach about the creed of the Salaf?

In A Return to Purity in Creed, Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali calls Muslims back to the creedal approach of the Salaf and explains why ordinary Muslims should avoid becoming entangled in speculative theology (kalām), leaving complex theological disputes to qualified scholars.

His message is especially relevant today: needless theological disputation can divide Muslims, while adherence to the foundational creed of the Salaf provides common ground that can help preserve Muslim unity.
