Our mission is to transform the criminal justice system by building a movement of public defenders who provide equal justice for marginalized communities.

The greatest civil and human rights abuses of our time continue in the American criminal justice system. Without the meaningful right to counsel, all other rights are left unrealized and the promise of equal justice is left unfulfilled.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring contributions of Black communities.

It also reminds us that justice delayed has real human consequences. More than two years passed between the Emancipation Proclamation and the day many enslaved people in Texas learned they were free.

The distance between rights promised and rights realized continues to shape our history and present.

As we celebrate, we honor that resilience and reflect on the ongoing work of ensuring equal access to justice and dignity for all.

"People who spoke a language I didn't understand were deciding my fate."

In a recent reflection for , Matt Stone describes sitting in court while struggling with addiction, feeling lost and unseen as the system moved around him. Then a public defender read the file and caught an error no one else noticed, including the court.

That moment changed the course of his case and how he experienced the system.
His story is a reminder that too many people navigate a legal system they don't fully understand while facing enormous pressure to accept outcomes that will shape the rest of their lives. Meaningful representation can be the difference between being processed and being heard.

At Gideon's Promise, we believe equal justice depends on ensuring every person has an advocate who sees their humanity, understands their story, and stands beside them when it matters most.

Maryland has taken an important step toward a more just approach to youth justice.

The Youth Charging Reform Act reduces the number of offenses that can automatically place children in the adult criminal legal system, reflecting years of advocacy from public defenders, impacted families, community leaders, and justice reform advocates.

At its core, this reform recognizes a truth that defenders see every day: children are more than the charges filed against them, and decisions about their future should be guided by fairness, evidence, and humanity.
While important work remains, this legislation reflects ongoing efforts to build a more just legal system for young people and their communities.

Pride Month is a reminder that dignity is not something people should have to leave behind when they encounter the criminal legal system.

LGBTQ+ people experience that system in distinct and often compounded ways, from arrest to incarceration and beyond, shaped by discrimination, housing instability, and lack of stable support.

Even in the face of those realities, there is resilience. There is community. There is the ongoing insistence on being seen and treated with dignity.

Pride is about that dignity, too.

Public defense exists in this space to ensure that every person’s rights are protected and that dignity is preserved at every stage of the process.

After more than 28 years of wrongful incarceration, Jermal Shuler, Marc Brittingham, and Rasheed Turner have been exonerated in Philadelphia.
Their case is a powerful reminder that wrongful convictions are often the result of systemic failures—not just flawed evidence, but systems that too often fail to protect the rights of people navigating the criminal legal system.
At Gideon’s Promise, we believe that every person deserves zealous, client-centered representation. For people from marginalized communities, where the consequences of those failures are often felt most acutely, strong defense advocacy is essential.
Today marks a measure of justice after decades of injustice. While no court ruling can restore the years lost, this exoneration reflects the power of persistent advocacy and the pursuit of truth.
