Gideon's Promise

Gideon's Promise Our mission is to transform the criminal justice system by building a movement of public defenders who provide equal justice for marginalized communities.

The greatest civil and human rights abuses of our time continue in the American criminal justice system. Without the meaningful right to counsel, all other rights are left unrealized and the promise of equal justice is left unfulfilled.

Grateful to be part of 'The South and the Next 250' this week with The Just Trust & The Marshall Project.

Our co-founder, Jonathan Rapping , joined a powerful conversation on justice in the American South as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary.

The project centers stories and inequities too often left out of the national narrative—and asks us to think more critically about the future of justice in America.

In two months, public defenders will gather for our Summer Institute—training that strengthens the people fighting for justice every day.

Investing in defenders means investing in communities and the promise of equal justice.

This Mother’s Day, we think of mothers and caregivers who show up for their families while also navigating a justice system that is often unforgiving.
A strong, zealous defense can mean the difference between separation and stability, between uncertainty and support.
Access to justice is ultimately about people—and the families who depend on it.

Access to justice depends on public defenders—but overwhelming caseloads make that work harder. We’re working toward a system that supports them and the communities they serve.

Last year at A Night to Celebrate, Mina Malik shared what she witnessed growing up in New York—and how those experiences shaped her understanding of injustice in our legal system.
Her story is a reminder: access to justice is not equal—and it won’t become equal without intentional change.
That’s what this work is about.
Be part of it on May 26. Link in bio.

May 1 is National Law Day—a time to reflect on the promise of justice, and the work still needed to make it real.

In Gideon v. Wainwright, the Court affirmed: “Lawyers in criminal courts are necessities, not luxuries.”

At Gideon’s Promise, we know the right to counsel is a cornerstone of a fair democracy. Every day, public defenders stand beside people in their most difficult moments, ensuring their rights are protected and their voices are heard.

Yet equal justice remains out of reach for too many. That’s why we invest in defenders—from law school to leadership—to strengthen representation and drive lasting system change.

This Law Day, we honor those advancing justice—and recommit to building a system that works for everyone.

In a room full of dockets and case numbers, public defenders make sure their clients are seen as human beings.
