Georgia CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates)

We support affiliate CASA programs to provide best-interest advocacy for children in foster care.

Appointed by a judge, CASA volunteers advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers are child-focused, help improve each child’s experience in foster care, and advocate for a safe and permanent home when reunification with the child’s family isn’t likely. CASA advocates are citizen volunteers, supported by an experienced and knowledgeable staff member, offering individualized attention and best-interest advocacy for children. The CASA program is the only model of this kind, built around one child and one compassionate, highly-trained adult advocate. Last year in Georgia, over 9,000 children were served by 2,600 CASA volunteers. Currently, 45 affiliate CASA programs exist in the state, serving 158 of Georgia's 159 counties.

"Advocacy was not something I first learned through CASA. Advocacy was something I first learned at home. My mother was an immigrant, and throughout my life there were times when I had to help her navigate systems that were unfamiliar to her. I read documents for her, translated information, explained paperwork, and helped her understand what people were asking of her. I sat beside her when systems felt confusing and overwhelming."

CASA volunteers serve children who have been removed from their homes as a result of abuse or neglect and need the court’s protection. They range in age from newborn to 17 years old and remain in the state’s care until the court determines a permanent placement that is in the child’s best interest.
A consistent, caring adult can have an amazing impact on the life of a child!

It's no secret that serving in the child welfare space can be heavy much of the time.
But we make a point of noticing and celebrating moments of hope and success from the field along the way. It may be something big, like a child reunited with her family. Or even something as small as a new CASA volunteer submitting his first court report.
Noticing these moments, and finding joy in them, is what helps us keep going, even on the difficult cases.

A new fiscal year means bringing fresh faces to our board of directors.

In addition to our traditional board members, we also include local CASA directors, elected by their peers, to represent the network's needs to our leadership. This year, we say hello to Jessica Blackrick of and Cary Greenfield of 👋

Other new board members include Stacy Garmon, Leadership Perimeter, Marietta; Ursula Reynolds, University of Georgia, Suwanee; and Mandira Mehra, MRI Software, Atlanta, returning to the board following a one-year sabbatical.

“We are grateful for the expertise, commitment, and passion each of these leaders brings to Georgia CASA,” said Jen King, Executive Director of Georgia CASA. “Our board plays an important role in helping us strengthen the CASA network and ensure that more children experiencing foster care have access to a consistent, caring adult advocate. We look forward to the leadership and perspective these members will bring to our work in the year ahead.”

A Meeting of the Minds!

Three years ago, we launched a LinkedIn Live series called Coffee with CASA. Every other month, we invited a CASA volunteer and their CASA staff support to join us for a deep dive convo about what it is like to serve as a CASA volunteer. Through it, we've met many amazing people who are CASA Curious, some who have even taken the step and are now CASA volunteers! ☕

This year, we've taken a little hiatus to reimagine all that the series is and all that it could be. Earlier this week, a CASA volunteer, a CASA staff who was also a previous guest, and members from our team came together to brainstorm how our live series Coffee with CASA can be better than ever... and as with any good brainstorm, one idea sparked another and another. What's coming next will be informative, purpose-driven, and maybe even a little fun.🔥
