We had so much fun creating this vision our HORIZONS at Carolina Day School community over the first week of programming by all of our students, teachers, and volunteers! It reflects so perfectly these kind words from one of our parents over the weekend:

“Thank you so much for your kindness. My family truly appreciate you and the Horizons family for all that you do for us. Thank you all for bringing all children together regardless of race, color, religion or financial background. Horizons is a beautiful blessing to our community!!”

At Horizons, most students come to the program as non-swimmers who are afraid of the water. Swimming is not only a life-saving skill, but by learning to swim, our students also build trust and self-esteem – qualities which influence success in the classroom. We are grateful to our partners Asheville YMCA and UNC Asheville for providing swim instruction and pool time for our aquatic learners!

Our annual teacher training sessions took place on May 4th and 5th, always providing an opportunity to reconnect, share new opportunities, and problem-solve in advance of our summer session. And this summer ALL of our 9 lead teachers are returning!

Our theme is "Creative Connections: From Me to the World." This theme will serve as a departure point for each grade level toward the development of understanding(s) of their world and themselves in it. Rising 2nd graders will focus on Cities and Transportation - meeting local firefighters, police officers, and building their own city. Our rising seventh graders will focus on themselves and community service, learning about and visiting a variety of the wonderful organizations in our community that improve lives with missions ranging from assisting the unhoused to environmental protection. These students will culminate their summer with a design challenge to engineer an assistive device that helps someone with a physical challenge.

The Joy of Growing With Students at Horizons
by Heather Crouch, Horizons Teacher

My first summer at Horizons, I taught rising fourth graders. Much of that summer focused on building relationships—with students in the classroom, on the basketball court, and during van rides to and from swimming. As an educator, it was both rewarding and challenging to form meaningful bonds in a six-week program while also keeping students engaged in reading and math during summer break.

I quickly learned that the “in-between” moments mattered just as much as formal instruction. Transition times, free moments, and casual conversations became opportunities to connect, build trust, and better understand my students. I also challenged myself to create classroom experiences that were engaging and joyful while still providing the strong academic enrichment that Horizons values.

For our final Super STEAM Saturday, we explored gardens, plant life cycles, and prepared our Horizons garden for the summer ahead. Students planted their own seeds in compostable pots they decorated, giving them something to nurture and watch grow at home. We were excited to welcome LaKyla from the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy back to lead these engaging activities. Students also painted rocks to contribute to Beloved Asheville’s garden at their very first Beloved Village housing community, opening soon. Pizza and fun cupcakes rounded out a perfect, sunny spring day!

We had a blast this past weekend at our March Super STEAM Saturday: March Mathness!

All of our students challenged their math skills through a variety of activities - including some mysteries to solve!

Our third through fifth graders had the opportunity to work with the team this month. They took part in a cardboard design challenge - some worked individually, and some collaborated with others to build a structure that could transport their choice of a stuffed animal!

We are so grateful for community partners and look forward to our April Super STEAM Saturday where we have more special guests coming to work with our students!
